Mob Burns Islamic Teacher to Death in Kaduna Over Unverified Child Theft Allegation

A horrific act of mob justice has shocked residents of Maraban Jos in Kaduna State after a woman identified as Malama Ummulkhairi was brutally killed and set ablaze by an enraged crowd over allegations of child theft that have not been substantiated.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has sparked outrage across the state and renewed concerns about the growing menace of jungle justice, lawlessness and the dangerous spread of mob violence fueled by rumours and misinformation.
According to accounts from family members and associates, the deceased, an Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children, had travelled from the New Maraban Jos area to attend an Islamic lecture reportedly organised at a local school in the old Maraban Jos axis.
Sources said she allegedly lost her way after being separated from some of her companions and sought directions from children in the neighbourhood. Shortly afterwards, some residents reportedly accused her of attempting to steal children, an allegation that witnesses and relatives insist was entirely baseless.
As tension escalated, a crowd gathered and the woman was reportedly taken to a nearby police station for her protection and investigation.
Family members who rushed to the station reportedly attempted to identify her and explain that she was a known Islamic teacher. Witnesses said efforts were also made to calm the situation and convince the crowd to allow security agencies to investigate the allegation.
However, events soon descended into chaos.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that a large mob later stormed the police station, overwhelmed officers on duty and forcibly removed the woman from protective custody.
The mob subsequently killed her and set her body ablaze in what observers have described as one of the most barbaric acts of jungle justice witnessed in recent times.
The gruesome killing has left many residents struggling to comprehend how a human being could be murdered in such a savage manner without any established evidence of wrongdoing.
The tragedy has also raised troubling questions about public trust in the justice system and the increasing willingness of some citizens to resort to violence based solely on suspicion.
Reacting to the incident, the Kaduna State Police Command strongly condemned the attack.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, described the act as barbaric, criminal and a direct assault on the rule of law.
According to the statement, police officers had moved the woman into custody for her safety and to investigate the allegation against her before the mob attacked the station.
The command disclosed that several suspects had already been arrested while efforts were ongoing to apprehend others involved in the attack.
It assured that a comprehensive investigation had commenced and that all those responsible would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the command would not tolerate jungle justice, mob violence or attacks on police formations and personnel.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement agencies and allow due process to take its course.
The killing has drawn widespread condemnation from community leaders, religious scholars and civil society groups, many of whom have described the incident as a stain on the conscience of society.
Beyond the tragic loss of a mother, teacher and community member, the incident represents a dangerous precedent where mere allegations can become a death sentence without investigation, evidence or trial.
Security stakeholders warned that when rumours become verdicts and mobs become judges, every innocent citizen becomes vulnerable.
The incident has reignited calls for authorities to ensure swift prosecution of all those involved, including anyone who participated in the attack, incited the violence or obstructed efforts to protect the victim.
Many residents insist that justice must not stop at condemnation.
They argue that those responsible must be identified, prosecuted and punished in accordance with the law to send a clear message that human life is sacred and that mob violence has no place in a civilized society.

Troops arrest soldier, recover 69 rounds of ammunition in Plateau

Troops of Sector 1, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have arrested a serving soldier and recovered ammunition and other military items during a stop-and-search operation at Babale Checkpoint in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The soldier, identified as 13NA/70/8069 Corporal Legedu Denebari, is serving with 109 Special Forces Battalion, Magumeri, Borno State, under Operation HADIN KAI.
He was arrested at about 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 2, 2026, during routine security checks at the checkpoint.
Items recovered from the soldier included one magazine, 69 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm Special ammunition, two Strike Force ballistic plates, two jack knives, one mobile phone, one power bank, one helmet, a Nigerian Army identity card and two pairs of camouflage uniforms.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier was on pass from his unit to Rivers State with effect from Sept. 2, 2026.
The soldier and the recovered items have been taken into custody for further investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the movement and possession of the ammunition and other military equipment.
The development underscores the importance of ongoing stop-and-search operations by security forces to prevent the unauthorised movement of arms, ammunition and military equipment across the Joint Operations Area.

Troops of Sector 4, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have arrested four suspected motorcycle thieves and recovered three motorcycles and weapons during an operation in Exland Village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The operation was conducted at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 1, following a report on the activities of suspected motorcycle snatchers operating in the area.
Sources said that the troops of Sub-Sector 41 deployed in Exland responded to the report and arrested four suspects at the location.
The suspects were identified as Yusuf Tahiru, 25; Ayuba Aliyu, 23; Anas Usman, 20, also known as “Kurra Berom”; and Ibrahim Muhammad, 20.
Following the arrests, troops conducted a cordon-and-search operation within the suspected area of activity and recovered three motorcycles believed to be connected to the suspects.
The troops also recovered one locally fabricated firearm, one cutlass and one knife during the operation.
The suspects and recovered exhibits have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by Operation ENDURING PEACE to tackle criminal activities, including motorcycle theft and armed crime, and strengthen security across communities in Plateau State.

Troops neutralise Boko Haram terrorist, recover AK-47 rifle in Lamusuri

Troops of the 120 Task Force Battalion, in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have neutralised a Boko Haram terrorist and recovered weapons during an ambush operation in Lamusuri, Borno State.
The operation was conducted at about 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 1, following credible intelligence on the movement of Boko Haram terrorists along a suspected route in the area.
According to a Special Situation Report issued by the Joint Task Force North-East under Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY V, the troops occupied an ambush position along the suspected terrorist route.
The troops subsequently sighted a group of Boko Haram elements moving through the area and engaged them, resulting in a firefight.
During the encounter, one Boko Haram terrorist was neutralised, while the other terrorists reportedly fled the area with gunshot wounds.
The troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one body pouch from the terrorists.
The successful operation followed sustained intelligence-led efforts by troops and their local security partners to disrupt terrorist movements and deny them freedom of action within the theatre.
The military assessment indicated that the general security situation remained calm but highly unpredictable, while troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remained satisfactory.
The latest operation further demonstrates the continued offensive posture of Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY V against Boko Haram elements and their logistics and movement networks in the North-East.
