The atmosphere in Sokoto state, northwest Nigeria is charged mass protest by Muslim fanatics over the arrest of two students who led the attack and killing of a female student at the College of Education, a high institution in the state for alledgedly insulting the Prophet of Islam.
NEWSng learnt that a doctored audio has been in circulation since the incident earlier this week contrary to what actually informed the provocation by Deborah Samuel to utter what the students tag as ‘blasphemy’.
According to report, the students dragged Deborah Samuel from the security office in the school where she was invited for questioning regarding the alleged claims by the attackers and forcefully beaten before she was being stoned to death and her remains burnt.
When Nigerians condemned the incident, Police in Sokoto state said they have arrested two of the students who led the attack, but that did not go well with some fanatics who went on to protest against the arrest by the police.
“Some Muslims in Sokoto State have today (Saturday) to embark on a“mass” protest against the arrest of two people suspected to be involved in the killing of a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, identified as Deborah Samuel/
“She was alleged to have said some words of blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam.” Umar Ibrahim told NEWSng “It was earlier reported how Deborah was violently stoned to death and later set ablaze by an angry mob, who are mostly students of the college. “
The Sokoto police spokesman, Sanusi Abubakar, said the mob overpowered campus security before killing the female student and setting her remains on fire.
The following day, some muslims dropped leaflets asking other muslims to mobilise and come out for a protest.

The leaflets written in Hausa language reads: “We’re inviting Muslims in Sokoto to come and help us rescue our brothers that were arrested because they were defending Islam and uplifting Prophet Muhammad.”
However, some of the students in the College told Newsmen in Sokoto that there is more to the story than the alleged blasphemy.
According to them, although the incident started when one of the attackers made some provocative statement against the Christians in the class on a WhatsApp group chat meant for exchange of knowledge, others took it lightly but Deborah could not avoid a situation which resulted in furthering her utterances.
“We also understand that one of the attackers was actually making passes on Deborah Samuel and she turned him down severally.” A student who Identify himself as Sani Musa alleged
Another student, did not identify himself said “The student was said to have threatened her, he also called her “Arniya’ (meaning idol worshiper) and also talk about a call for jihad. This was actually what made Deborah say “HolyGhost fire’ nothing will happen to us. And she added with that concluding statement that led the students to begin to shout, “Allahu Akbar” and kill her.”
According to him there is some truth in the WhatsApp group chat and comments by the student which could be of use to the authorities.
“It was sad, she was not that violent of a lady for those who know her, but things can happen and it is unfortunate that this happened to her.” He added
