Nigeria: 1,769 individuals displaced in Rann after last week attack

A total of 1,769 individuals from 332 households were displaced from Klagaru Camp in Rann.

Rann is a ward in Kala Balge local government area in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria. It is located towards the neighboring villages in Cameroon Republic.

The villages where the displaced persons are currently hibernating since their displacement last week are Bodo, Chingori, Biyamu, Madina and Baram Karaguwa in the Republic of Cameroon.

Rann is about 350km away from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital and has suffered a series of attacks from Boko Haram since the locals returned some few years despite continuing attacks.

NEWSng gathered that, IOM a United Nations agency conducted what it calls Rapid Assessment following the attack in Rann where a report on September 1, 2021 indicated that a total of 1,796 persons from 332 households were forced to flee their homes to find safe haven in Cameroon border communities.

The report reads: “On 30 August 2021 at about 3:00am, a Non-State Armed Group (NSAG) carried out an attack in Rann A ward in Kala Balge LGA of Borno State, leading to a substantial wave of population displacement. 

“Following the attack, a rapid assessment was conducted by DTM field staff with the purpose of informing the humanitarian community and government partners, and enabling targeted response. Flash reports utilize direct observation and a broad network of key informants to gather representative data and collect information on the number, profile and immediate needs of the affected population.”

On the number of casualties, there have been different figures both from the communities, Soldiers and Humanitarian actors.

While the military said soldiers have regrouped and retake their bases after 24 hours their claim according to locals was far from what actually took place in Rann.

Although there is general acceptance that the ISWAP fighters took control of the area after displacing the soldiers. They however, did not hurt civilians.

“Three people were injured while trying to flee the attack and one person died” locals said.
