Nigeria’s Position on Russia/Ukraine Situation Remains Unchanged- Tuggar

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar has said despite the recent condolence message to Russian on Moscow attack, the country’s criticism of Russian aggression on Ukraine still remains unchanged.
The minister made this clarification when he hosted members of the diplomatic correspondents in Abuja on Thursday.
He told journalists that Nigeria addresses issues on its merit and that the condolence message to the Russian government was not out of place and not in contradiction of any earlier held positions.
He said despite condoling with the Russian government over the attack that killed over 140 people, Nigeria still maintained her position of condemning the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
He said: “Nigeria has been consistent in terms of even when we had a bipolar world, we were non-aligned, we were neither with the US nor the Soviet bloc at the time.
“We dealt with both sides. We are equal opportunity aligners, we are aligned with the interests of Nigeria and we will continue to do so.
“This is why we continue to emphasize today on strategic autonomy and that’s the new name for non-alignment since we no longer have those two blocs, you no longer have a bipolar world.
“With the structure that you have now, it is a multipolar world. We align with whatever benefits Nigeria.”
He said: “The tradition of condoling with countries when they have such unfortunate incidents continues. It’s not new. And Russia is not an enemy.”
The Minister maintained hat there has always been a relationship with Russia since the Soviet and Cold War eras, stressing that the Ajaokuta Steel Complex was built by the Soviet Union at the time.
He said: “Our position on violation of territorial integrity of countries remains the same, it remains consistent, we condemned the violation of Ukraine’s territorial space when it occurred but it does not mean that because of that, we will stop dealing with Russia.
“We will continue to deal with Ukraine, the same way we’re dealing with other countries and whenever something happens to them, whenever there is any misfortune, we will commiserate with them, the same way that they commiserate with us,” Tuggar added.

Buhari’s Passing: FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Deceased Ex-President

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July, 2025, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This is in futherance to the seven days of National mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Monday on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, stated that the holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.
He said: “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
He urged citizens to use the day to honour the late President’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, in line with his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.
He noted that as earlier announced, the National flags are to fly at half mast for the seven days of mourning period from Sunday 13th July, 2025.
The Federal Government extends deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The Embassy in a message on X commiserate with the government and the people of Nigeria.
The message read: “The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria extends our deepest condolences to the people of Nigeria on the passing of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), Former President of Nigeria.
“We mourn a resolute leader whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress leaves an enduring legacy.
“His pivotal contributions to advancing China-Nigeria relations will forever remain etched in our shared history. Our thoughts are with his family and Nigerian people.”

Advocates the Naming of the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, after the Deceased

Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub has joined numerous individuals, groups and countries across the globe to mourn the passing of Nigeria ‘s former President, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Retd) who passed away at 82.
In a message he personally signed and made available to the public, late Sunday, the former lawmaker said the entire nation was particularly saddened by the sudden passing of a man who gave his all to Nigeria as a soldier, a politician, a mentor to many as well as a nationalist.
Yakub, who emphasized that the former Nigerian leader, would forever live in the hearts and minds of generations of Nigerians who knew him and those who would, eventually, read about his incorruptibility and altruistic approach to service, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to President Tinubu, the former President’s immediate family and to all Nigerians.
Yakub message read in part: “On behalf of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) and its Management, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, government and good people of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While we mourn this great soldier, nationalist and Leader, we remember his dedication to democracy, regional stability, and the unity of Nigeria, as well as his unwavering commitment to the anti-corruption crusade, which endeared him to many Nigerians.”
The NTAC boss while praying for the forgiveness of the sins of Buhari, suggested
that a great national monument, like the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, be named after the late leader.
He said: ” May Allah grant him Aljana firdausi and grant his family and entire Nigerians the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Born in Daura, Katsina State in 1942,the former President distinguished himself as a soldier,a politician and a national hero of all time.Having held the position of Nigerian leader twice, a Federal Commissioner of Petroleum,a Military Governor of what is today the Northeast Geopolitical Zone as well as the head of Abacha’s development behemoth,the Petroleum Trust Fund,among others, Buhari in service was acknowledged to have lived above board and held his head high as an incorruptible Nigerian.
He will be remembered more by the principles he espoused in leadership than the monuments he built for self, kith or kin.
