Journalists in the print and electronic media have been charged to strictly adhere to the professional ethics while reporting the 2023 general elections in the country.
The Head of Department, Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Dr. Nuhu Gabsiso gave the charge, yesterday (Monday), in Maiduguri, while the executives of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a courtesy visit.
According to him, adhering to professionalism with responsible journalism; will enable the electorates to make informed choices among the candidates contesting for various elective positions under the 18 political parties.
He, therefore, called on the NUJ, led by Comrade Dauda Iliya not to hesitate to discipline any erring member; who compromised with the ethical standards.
He warned that it could further polarize the country and the West Africa subregion.
“We are in a critical period of our nation’s history,” he said, as insecurity to lives and property lingers with the 2023 general election approaching.
He noted that journalists have the responsibility of elevating the truth above any other interests and considerations,
He reiterated this to have a peaceful and secured country after the 2023 elections.

On the training of 100 journalists, Gabsiso called on the leadership of the union to identify emerging areas where journalists require training.
“Our Department is willing to build the capacities of NUJ members in the state,” he said, adding that the department will soon commence the Master’s programme on journalism and other related fields.
Prof. Abubakar Mu’azu, also called on the union to periodically organise public lecture on issues of public interest to restore the image of NUJ.
