Over 50 persons trapped as 21 Storey Building Collapsed in Lagos
Over 50 persons were reportedly trapped in the rubble as 21 storey building under construction collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos state
Workers at the site and others who are working near the collapsed building said the owner of the building also died.
According to them about three bodies were recovered as emergency workers are trying to rescue some of the trapped victims.
The workers who were angry with the situation blame the Lagos state government for not coming around to inspect buildings to ensure it was to a standard.
“There are so many buildings under construction around here but hardly do you see government people coming around to inspect and that is why we continue to have collapsed buildings particularly here in Lagos.” One of the workers told newsmen
The Acting Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye had earlier confirmed the incident.

The Building which is located at number 20, Gerrard Road collapsed on Monday afternoon at about 3: pm while work was ongoing at the site..
Farinloye who spoke to newsmen said the immediate cause of the collapse is not known. However emergency responders are at the scene of the collapsed building.
“Until they are done we cannot say what happened or know the number of casualties but it was feared that many people were trapped in the building. This is an unfortunate situation.” He added.
Also the Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Mr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the collapse of the building in Ikoyi, adding that the agency has activated it’s response plan and are currently working to save lives at the moment.
A resident of Ikoyi Mr. Aliyu Sule told NEWSng that the collapsed building was near his office.
According to him they heard a loud sound and all rushed out of the office only to discover people running to the scene.
“I did not go there because you know I don’t like seeing scenes that will not allow me to sleep . Moreover, I am not an emergency worker and even if I am there, I cannot do anything.” He said.
