Police commissioner reiterates commitments to combat GBV in Yobe

Yobe State Commissioner of Police, C. P. Garba Ahmed, has reiterated the command’s commitment to combating gender-based violence (GBV) and related crimes, and the command has also achieved significant success in tackling these heinous crimes, which often leave victims with severe physical and emotional trauma.

CP Garba Ahmed started this in a statement signed by the Command PPRO, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, which was made available to newsmen in Damaturu.

The statement further said that the command recently arrested Mallam Auwalu Haruna, a self-proclaimed Marabou, for alleged abduction, use of charms, and impregnating a 20-year-old woman.

According to him, between January and June 2024, the command recorded 34 cases of GBV and related crimes, with 85% currently undergoing trial and a few convictions secured.

Dungus said, in the latest incident, Tarmuwa Division Police Headquarters received a complaint from Alhaji Mohammed Kellu that his daughter was abducted by Mallam Auwalu Haruna on June 6, 2024.

“Following a thorough search, the victim was found in the suspect’s custody in the Anguwan Arewa Gaya local government area of Kano State.

“Medical examination revealed that the victim was two months pregnant. The victim confessed that she was coerced into drinking a medicinal concoction, which rendered her unconscious and vulnerable to the perpetrator’s action. The state CID has launched an investigation into the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, urges parents, guardians, and community leaders to be vigilant about the relationships their wards have with others, as perpetrators are often close relatives, neighbors, or acquaintances.

He also calls on stakeholders to join forces in combating GBV, which has far-reaching consequences for the well-being and development of the girl child and society at large. The command assures that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
