Pregnant woman, female undergraduate, 26 others arrested with tons of illicit drugs

A pregnant woman, a nursing mother and a 200-level university student were among 28 persons arrested with 9,437.6 kilogrammes of cannabis and 138,053 tablets of pharmaceutical opioids including other illicit drugs during massive raids by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) across the country in the last one week.
The spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi said the arrests and seizures were made during interdiction operations across 12 states of Yobe, Ondo, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
He said in the FCT, operatives on Saturday stormed a village known as Chukuku, which is about 10 kilometres from Gwagwalada where they raided a large cannabis warehouse. A total of 510 jumbo bags of the illicit substance weighing 5,640 kilogrammes were recovered from the store and a nursing mother in charge, Sa’adatu Abdullahi, 35, was arrested.
In Yobe State, operatives intercepted 48 kilogrammes of cannabis in Buni Yadi, and also raided a location in Potiskum where they recovered 56 blocks (31 kilogrammes) from two suspects: Mohammed Mamuda and a married pregnant woman, Hauwa Haruna.
Babafemi also disclosed that at least, 99 bags of cannabis and three bags of its seeds weighing 1,286 kilogrammes were seized last Thursday when operatives raided a location in Ogbese area of Ondo state, while another raid at Umukpe forest in Uhunmonde council area of Edo state led to the seizure of 410 kilogrammes of the same substance in addition to a motorcycle, two dane guns and the arrest of two suspects: Numga Anim, 30, and Friday Ebije, 50.
He added that not less than 50 bags of cannabis weighing 623 kilogrammes were also recovered at Ekpom village in Igueben LGA with the arrest of the owner, Lucky Henry, 30, while another suspect, Ndidi Esegine, 52, at Ugbodo forest, Ovia North East local government area with 266.8 kilogrammes of cannabis last Tuesday
He said two days later, operatives stormed Uzebba forest in Owan West local government area to destroy four cannabis farms where two suspects: Ezekiel Raphael and Gideon Bassey were arrested with a total of 223.5 kilogrammes processed cannabis recovered.
Babafemi said a stop and search operation along the East/West road, in Ahoada area of Rivers state led to the recovery of 251.4 kilogrammes of cannabis in a gold colour Toyota Sienna bus with Reg No – Abuja YAB 70 BR, and a suspect, Segun Ajayi arrested, while 161.4 kilogrammes were equally recovered, from an ash colour Toyota Camry saloon car with Reg No- Abuja RBC 590 BQ.
In Akwa Ibom state, attempt by a trans-border trafficker, Edet Osu James, 44, to export 2.4 kilogrammes cocaine concealed in two large tins of powdered milk to Cameroon was foiled by officers of the Marine unit of the agency last Thursday during an outward clearance of vessels going to Cameroon from Oron. In Imo state, no fewer than 10,690 pills of tramadol were intercepted during stop and search operations along Owerri-Onitsha road with three suspects: Saadu Usman; Godwin Emeka and Emeka Obijihe arrested in follow-up efforts last Thursday.
He said interestingly, Emeka Obijihe was already standing trial for a similar offence for which he was arrested on 9th May 2022 and was on court bail when he was arrested again last Thursday for trafficking 6.5 kilogrammes of tramadol.
In Jigawa state, operatives recovered 67,300 pills of exol-5 and tramadol at Dansure/Roni junction while in Kogi state, a total of 46,100 pills of the same opioids were seized along Okene-Abuja highway both last Thursday with at least, six suspects arrested at a notorious drug location in Ngurore town, Adamawa state with a total of 495 kilogrammes cannabis seized in addition to different quantities of opioids. Suspects arrested include: Chidi Titus; Vincent Donatus; Badishi Bitrus; Abubakar Inuwa; Abdul Abdul and Inuwa Ado Isa.
He also said at least, 5,480 pills of tramadol were seized from two suspects: Dalhatu Salisu and Hamisu Ishaq, who were arrested last Wednesday by operatives along Abuja-Kaduna express road, while a total of 3,800 bottles of new psychoactive substance, Akuskura and 7,760 tablets of tramadol were recovered from five suspects along Ilorin-Jebba highway. Four of the suspects: Idris Nadir, 38; Suleiman Mubammed, 68; Babangida Zaki, 30 and Yahaya Lawal claimed they were coming from Ibadan, Oyo state and taking the Akuskura to Katsina, Kano and Birnin Kebbi. The fifth suspect, Nafiu Idris, who was arrested with the tramadol pills said he was taking them to Kankara in Katsina state.

Also, a 200-level student of Mass Communication at National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Ms. Mercy Nyong, 30, was last Wednesday arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for attempting to export 300 grammes of tramadol 225mg concealed in incense products going to Dubai, UAE.
Babafemi said nine Ghanaians were arrested for attempting to smuggle 10,843.95kgs cannabis into Nigeria through the sea were last Friday convicted and sentenced to 72 years imprisonment. He revealed that they were initially arrested by men of the Civil Defence Corps and transferred to NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.
He said at the conclusion of investigations, they were arraigned in charge number FHC/L/292C/2021. Delivering his ruling in the matter on Friday, Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court, Lagos convicted the Ghanaians of conspiracy and dealing in cannabis and thereafter sentenced each of them to eight years in prison. The convicts include: Victor Wuddah; Freeman Gazul; Adotete Joseph; Sottie Moses;
Sottie Stephen; Christian Tette; Kanu Okonipa; Daniel Koyepti; and Kanu Natte.
Meanwhile, the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) while commending the officers and men of Yobe, MMIA, Ondo, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos and FCT Commands of the anti-narcotics agency for their efforts at drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction, charged them and their counterparts across other commands not to rest on their oars.

Troops Arrest Two Suspected Berom Militia Linked to NIPSS Attack as Security Sources Say Investigation Supports Earlier Leads

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have arrested two suspected Berom militia allegedly linked to the recent attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, in another significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended at about 3:30 p.m. on July 4 during an intelligence-led operation by troops of Sector 6 at Trade Centre in Jos South.
According to the sources, one of the suspects was identified as Mr. Aboi, while the identity of the second suspect has yet to be officially released as investigations continue.
The sources said the two men were arrested in connection with the failed attack on the NIPSS facility and are currently undergoing interrogation to assist security agencies in identifying and apprehending other members of the alleged criminal militia network.
“The suspects are being exploited for further intelligence that could lead to the arrest of other members of the group involved in the attack,” one of the security sources said.
The latest arrests followed the July 2 attempted attack on the strategic national institution, during which troops engaged suspected Berom militia in a gun battle, killing one suspect while others escaped into nearby rocky terrain.
During that operation, troops recovered a service rifle bearing registration number CO-3175, which military authorities said had earlier been stolen from a soldier killed during an attack on troops at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11.
The recovery of the weapon had already prompted security agencies to widen investigations into possible links between the recent attacks on security personnel operating within the Kuru-Vom axis.
Following the publication of Zagazola Makama’s report identifying the slain attacker as a suspected member of an armed Berom militia operating within the area, the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) issued a statement rejecting the report.
Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the association’s president, denied that the Berom ethnic community operated any militia group and challenged the report’s conclusions, arguing that the ethnicity of the deceased had not been independently established.
He claimed that the association had conducted inquiries and spoken to people within the community, but that no one claimed to know the identity of the attacker. He challenged Zagazola Media Network to back its claims with evidence and urged security agencies and journalists to rely only on verified information in reporting security incidents.
Subsequently, Zagazola Makama published additional reporting stating that the deceased attacker had been identified by local residents and multiple security and community sources as Peter, a Berom resident of the Trade Centre area. The report was supported by a 17-second WhatsApp video clip in which an individual identified the attacker as someone from his area.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the arrest of the latest suspects in the same Trade Centre axis, where Peter was reportedly traced, has strengthened investigators’ efforts to establish the composition of the group responsible for the attacks.
The sources, however, stressed that investigations remain ongoing and that the suspects would be afforded due process while intelligence exploitation continues.
Military authorities have yet to issue an official statement naming the suspects or announcing any formal charges.
Meanwhile, security has been reinforced around the NIPSS complex, with troops maintaining aggressive patrols, surveillance and domination operations aimed at preventing further attacks on the institution and adjoining communities.
The arrests are expected to assist investigators in unraveling the network behind the repeated attacks on security personnel and strategic facilities within the Kuru-Vom corridor.

One killed, another injured in Fulani Bandits attack as troops arrest suspect in Plateau

Troops of Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace have arrested a suspect following an attack by Fulani Bandits on Rinyan Community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau that left one person dead and another injured.
Security sources said the troops responded at about 4:00 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of an attack by suspected armed Fulani militia on the community.
According to the sources, on arrival at the scene, the troops found one person dead, while another victim had sustained gunshot wounds.
The injured victim was evacuated to the General Hospital in Riyom for medical treatment.
The sources said the troops immediately pursued the fleeing assailants but did not establish contact with them.
However, one suspect was arrested during the operation and is currently in custody undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
The military has maintained intensified operations across Plateau to curb attacks and apprehend those responsible for violent crimes in the state.

Troops Repel Terrorist Attack on Forward Operating Base in Zamfara

Troops of Combat Team 5 (CT 5) have repelled a terrorist attack on their Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Moriki, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the terrorists launched the attack at about 1:00 a.m. on Friday, assaulting the base from multiple directions.
The sources said the troops maintained their defensive positions and successfully repelled the attackers after an exchange of gunfire.
During the incident, three civilians sustained gunshot wounds and were immediately evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
The sources added that the situation has since been brought under control, while security has been reinforced in the area to prevent further attacks.
