Presidency seeks more media partnership in nation building

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina has solicited for continued partnership with the media to help government and Nigerians to realise the Nigeria of their dream.

Adesina made the call in Abuja on Wednesday when he received the Ace Leadership Award presented to him by the management of Love FM 104.5 Abuja as part of its Merit Awards 2022.

The award-giving ceremony had earlier taken place in June.

Expressing his appreciation to the organisation, Adesina said: “the media should partner with government instead of being adversaries.

“What you find in the media at times is that they are so adversarial to government, which does not have to be.

“This is our country and we don’t have any other one.

“If they send the country into a tailspin through too much criticism, even the media won’t even be able to do its work.

“So, we should always bear in mind that it is our country and whatever we make of it is what we get.”

Presenting the award, the representative of Love FM, Ms Lilian Anele, expressed its pride in the work of Adesina as a journalist, having gotten to the peak of his career through dint of hard work.

“We are happy to identify with you because we know how you started. You rose through the ladder and here you are, still doing the media work.

“We know it is not everybody that will accept what you are doing,’’ she said.

“Sometimes we criticise you; we learnt that from you anyway. Before you got here, you were criticising others. We have come to say congratulations in spite of all that has happened.

“We are proud at the level you have reached and pray that God will sustain you and give you more wisdom to deal with the challenges associated with the job,’’ she added.

*Arrested in tactical uniform, with fake pistol, allegedly extorting motorists

The Department of State Services (DSS) late on Wednesday in Abuja arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye, discovered to be impersonating a personnel of the Service.

Maiye, who claimed to hail from Agbajojun Village, Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was trailed and arrested by DSS officers in his hideout around the NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja.

At the time of his arrest, Maiye was in DSS tactical uniform and armed with a fake pistol.

According to a security source, the Secret police acted on credible intelligence that Maiye was using the uniform and the fake weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists, extorting money from them.

During interrogation, added the source, the suspect reportedly claimed that his brother was a DSS personnel who died years ago.

He identified the brother as Monday Maiye, stressing that the DSS kit in his possession was his late brother’s.

The suspect is currently being interrogated as security operatives, the source stated, adding that the Service was investigating how he came about the DSS uniform and kit.

“Investigators are also trying to establish how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion.

“The arrest underscores growing concerns by the Service over the activities of individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminality,” the source declared.
