Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has advised the newly elected chairmen of the 17 local government councils to promote transparency and accountability in handling local government finances, assets, and equipment.

Buni gave the advice today when swearing in the newly elected chairmen of the 17 local government councils at the cultural center in Damaturu, the state capital.

He warned them to ensure that government properties are always reflected in handing and taking over notes, and in addition, to maintain a contract register to facilitate monitoring and evaluation, levels of work, and their corresponding expenditures.

The governor also charged them to improve the provision of basic facilities and services such as security, water supply, sanitation, healthcare delivery, and agriculture, as well as partner with the federal and state governments in implementing programs initiated by the federal, state, or both.

He said that the overwhelming victory of the APC is a clear indication that it remains the most popular and liked party. He noted that the party will continue to wax stronger and win future elections at all levels with ease.

He commends the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission for organizing a credible, free, and fair exercise, giving every candidate and political party the opportunity to participate, and ensuring that no voter is desenfranchised.

“The just concluded local government council election has no doubt demonstrated to entrench and nurture democracy in the local councils and bring government closer to the people” he said.

Governor Mai Mala Buni also commends all the political parties, the contestants, and their supporters for the spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated in the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections.

He appeals to the entire people of Yobe State to continue to support and cooperate with the government and the security agencies, and he also commends the security operatives for maintaining law and order during the exercise.
