Security has been beefed up on our main campus with the near completion of the fence against boko haram – Sugaba

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri Prof Aliyu Shugaba has said that security against the boko haram insurgents has been beefed up with the near completion of the massive fence around the main campus to protect the community.

The VC who responded to questions from reporters in a valedictory briefing Friday said that the fence project of the University which was commenced in 2021 to stop insurgents from killing people in the community would have been completed but for the challenges of the insurgents who keeps pulling down the built up areas of the facility.

So instead of the three years journey of building being ended by now, it has been one step forward and two backwards because of the torments of the insurgents who do not want a particular area closed so that they will continue to have access to the campus.

“So the problem of closure of that area now stands with the military and their ability to ward off the intruders and secure the space for the work to go on. As soon as the military can give a go ahead for the work to commence, it would be completed” said Shugaba.

The VC regretted that the delay in the completion of the fence had lingered because while the project was going on, the boko haram insurgents kept tormenting the workers and pulling down the fence at the same time.

So to avoid further casualties, and the fear of being slaughtered while building, management is waiting for the military to stabilize the area before risking the lives of the workers on sight at all.

Shugaba said that at least 95 percent of the fence has been completed with all the security gadgets installed on them as designed from inception in 2021.

At least eighty percent of the University land is located inside the Sambisa forest area which has been a strong hold of the insurgent Boko Haram who have vowed to fight western education which the university of Maiduguri stands for.

However, there is a massive presence of soldiers at the fence area to ensure that the over 40,000 students population and the entire community is safe
