President of the Ninth Senate, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, Ph.D., GCON, Sardaunan Bade, Yobe North Senatorial District, has commended the leadership of the National Assembly for its intervention towards ensuring that the dispute between labor unions and the federal government is resolved.
Yesterday, the Senate debated the recent strike action by labor unions in the country amid ongoing negotiations on the minimum wage for workers between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
In a statement issued and signed by the President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, Ph.D., GCON, Sardaunan Bade, it was made available to newsmen in Damaturu.
He stressed that one of the ways of addressing the welfare concerns raised by labor unions in the country was for the federal government to introduce economic policies aimed at reducing the hardship faced by Nigerians.
“I also underscored the need for the federal government to enhance the value of our currency, the naira. It is my opinion that doing so would help set the bar for realistic expectations that are commensurate with the living standards of workers.
Senator Lawan reminded his colleagues that the current hardship faced by workers is one that also affects poor Nigerians who are unemployed and not entitled to the minimum wage. I, therefore, advised the federal government to also consider disadvantaged Nigerians who are poor while trying to meet the demands of labor unions.
