Senator Lawan donates N25 million to flood victims in Yobe

Former Senate President, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, Ph.D., GCON Sardaunan Bade, has donated N25 million to flood victims in his Senatorial District of Yobe North.

Senator Ahmed Lawan made the donation over the weekend when he paid a visit to Nguru and Karasuwa local government areas to assess the extent of damage caused by recent flooding.

The president of the Ninth Senate, during his visit to both local government areas on Saturday, donated the sum of $20 million to flood victims in Nguru, a town severely affected by recent flooding, and $5 million to displaced persons in Karasuwa local government area, respectively.

Senator Lawan urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) to, as a matter of urgency, address the immediate and long-term needs of those displaced by flooding in Yobe North Senatorial District.

He commended the ongoing efforts by both agencies to provide assistance to the victims.

Senator Ahmed Lawan appealed to the Federal Government to provide sustainable solutions that include constructing drainage systems and embankments to control water flow to mitigate the impact of future disasters in parts of the country affected by flooding.

“I commend the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) for commencing efforts to provide assistance to the victims.” Senator Lawan said.

According to him, more needs to be done to address the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by natural disasters.

He urges both agencies to urgently provide additional relief materials, such as food, shelter, clothing, and medical supplies, as well as support to the affected communities.

The lawmaker urged residents of the affected communities in Yobe North Senatorial District to cooperate with relevant authorities and follow instructions on safety measures.
