Talking Issues On Gov Zulum’s Campaign Council

By: Inuwa Bwala

The political mood in Borno today is that, the re-election of Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum along with his Deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur, for a second term, is a fait accompli, even before the ballots are cast.

This assumption is not predicated upon the incumbency factor, neither financial war chest or even level of preparedness, rather, the superlative performance of the Governor since he assumed office and the attendant open expression of support by the citizenry to Governor Zulum.

Perhaps, marketing the Zulum/Kadafur ticket, is one of the easiest political tasks, any of his handlers may have to undertake.

It was not surprising that, every politician of note in Borno feels proud to associate with Zulum’s success story, just as everybody seems to be falling over themselves, trying to get their names  on the campaign list for his re-election.

The list of members of the Campaign Council, recently released and the consequent inauguration of the council by the Governor on Sunday is a testimony, to the fact that, there is a growing certainty that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s re-election is the main project.

Before the inauguration of the campaign council, the situation was rather unpredictable, as opposition parties had a field day trying to create a deceptive narrative, skewing people’s minds with unsubstantiated credentials, often using hired crowd.

But as  expected, the inauguration of Zulum/Kadafur Campaign Council has put to test many of the questions being asked before now, about who are likely to jump ship or work as fifth columnists.

It was a roll call of who is who in Borno Politics, it was also day that brought together old political foes under one roof: for just one objective: to deliver Governor Zulum in the next elections.

While political analysts were busy painting the picture of a likely stiff opposition and possible upturn, realities point to a lame opposition, with an overwhelming victory for Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.

If the speeches delivered at the inauguration were the yardstick, or even the emergence of mass support groups,  the Governor could go to sleep with two eyes closed.

Even in the eyes of the perceived strength of the opposition, Zulum is going to win with a 80% certainty, given the calibre of people set out to anchor hus campaigns.

Listening to each speaker during the inauguration of the campaign council, one is assured, that, indeed a new agenda has been  set and everyone is fighting hard to be counted, as Zulum sets the ball rolling for political activities to start.

Time and space will not allow me to reel out the name of everybody on the list, but it goes without saying, that all the gladiators are on board, and everybody has agreed to go down to the grassroots for the campaigns.

It was indeed comforting, seeing all the political players since the Mala Kachallah era getting listed to campaign for Zulum. It is more so, that everyone seems to have put aside past political rivalries and accept to work for Zulum.

I stand to be corrected, but I feel everybody has been carried along,  what lies ahead is  for the people of Borno state to choose between what is manifestly possible and what only qualifies as mere political theorizing in the next dispensation.
