THE EFFECT OF DEFORESTATION: The Plateau Valley

BY: Alexander Zidon

Walking through the valley and shadows of Jos wildlife park, my heart skipped from the sight of the lack of trees that once stood beautiful adoring the vast fields. Indeed our forest needs protection from the activities of men. Most of the trees have fallen through human activities and not by natural happenings.

Deforestation is the major calamity confronting our environment today growing by the day. Deforestation simply means wood extraction (logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal) . These habits include trees fallen for road construction and urban housing development which may cause climate change in our environment today.

Sadly, soil erosion, flooding, desertification and health issues are invited.   As long as this habit continues we cannot have control over natural disasters and its consequences. Failure from the part of our leaders has led the people into falling trees to provide firewood for domestic usage.

The price of cooking gas is between #700/kg or more , kerosene is #250/liter and above ,charcoal is #3000/bag or more. Many people cannot afford to buy, resulting in the use of firewood products from trees. Unless we do the needful, our forest will soon be the thing of the past
