This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

The extension, which takes immediate effect, will run until February 2027, following the expiration of the current extension on Aug. 1, 2026.

According to the statement, the decision is aimed at ensuring the full implementation of the National Single Window project and facilitating an orderly succession process within the service.

It added that during the transition period, the Comptroller-General, working with the Nigeria Customs Service Board, would oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.

He is also expected to supervise the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years in the service, in line with extant public service regulations.

Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and rose through the ranks over the years.

He was appointed Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before his appointment as Comptroller-General in June 2023 by President Tinubu.

The Presidency said the extension reflects confidence in his leadership and ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the Nigeria Customs Service.
