In the 90’s I did a feature on a town called Shaffa presently in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State titled “Shaffa: A Town With Three Traditional Rulers” published in the defunct Democrat Newspaper. One of the traditional rulers was late Lawan Adamu Sakirdala Balami popularly known as Lawan Baba Dan Birni.

As fate will have it I am today writing his tribute.    Late Lawan Adamu Sakirdala  Balami was born in 1927 in Bwala village of Shaffa district. Lawan Adamu worked briefly in Jos between 1952 and 1955. He was with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) from 1963 to 1973.

While at the railway, he was elected as the Chairman of the Railway Workers Union Zaria. His love for peace, justice and unity gave him that position. His charisma, and love for his people he was automatically made the Chairman of the Bura Cultural Association (BCA) Samaru- Zaria.

Having successfully resigned from the Railway Corporation in 1973, the late Lawan made his mark in Farming, Transport, Produce and Textile business at his home town in Shaffa.

In 1991, Sakirdala was appointed and turbanned as the first Lawan of Shaffa East by the Biu Emirate Council. In 1995 he stepped aside becoming an elder statesman and lived in peace with his fellow kinsmen.

Late Lawan Adamu will always be remembered as one of the most peaceful charismatic Lawan in Shaffa district. His love, tolerance, justice and fairness to his will remain in the minds of many.

He died and left behind his wife, children and grandchildren. One among them is Peace Ambassador (Barr) Ibrahim Adamu Shaffa. He was 95 year. May his soul rest in peace.
