Troops repel Boko Haram/ISWAP ambush in Borno, kill 10, recover arms

Troops of Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, have repelled an ambush by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Borno State, killing 10 insurgents and recovering a cache of arms and equipment.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday during ongoing Operation Desert Sanity V/Siege Operations.
The source said troops of Sector 1, in conjunction with elements of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters, came under attack by terrorists who were in an ambush position with a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) and small arms fire.
“The troops, who were on high alert, responded with heavy volume of fire and successfully repelled the ambush.
“The attack was followed by the detonation of an IED on the troops, but their swift response forced the terrorists to withdraw in disarray, with several of them killed and others sustaining gunshot wounds,” the source said.
He added that a reinforcement team from Ngoshe swiftly moved to cut off the terrorists’ withdrawal routes along the foothills of the Mandara Mountains and successfully ambushed the retreating fighters.
“Troops mounted a hot pursuit on the remnants who managed to escape and exploited the general area towards the withdrawal routes, recovering several bodies and equipment,” he said.
The source said 10 terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, including two senior leaders identified as Basulhu, a key commander, and his second-in-command, Ubaida.
Items recovered from the terrorists include three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, five motorcycles, two hand grenades, two Baofeng radios, 12 AK-47 magazines, 197 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, one RPG charger, two detonating cords, 13 nine-volt batteries, an iron bar, a bandolier and a camel bag.
The source said the general security situation in the area remained relatively calm but fluid, adding that troops continued to maintain maximum alertness.

The Deputy Commander of Operation Rainbow, CSP Dennis David Babale, has been killed after gunmen suspected to be Fulani Bandits ambushed personnel of the security outfit along the Bokkos-Barkin Ladi road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Zagazola Makama reports that the incident occurred at about 4:06 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when the personnel, travelling in a Toyota Hilux vehicle, came under attack by unidentified gunmen.
Troops of Sector 4, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), responded to a distress report and moved to the location of the attack.
Sources said that Babale sustained gunshot wounds during the ambush and was evacuated to the General Hospital, Barkin Ladi, for medical attention.
He, however, later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Following the attack, troops, working alongside personnel of other security agencies, launched offensive operations and a manhunt for the assailants within the general area.
Security forces have intensified efforts to track the attackers and prevent further attacks along the route.
The latest incident comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where armed attacks and reprisals have continued to pose challenges to the safety of communities and security personnel.

Troops of Sector 5, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), Bokkos, have foiled a kidnap attempt and rescued three victims along the Sha-Daffo road in Daffo District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Zagazola Makama reports that the incident occurred at about 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, following a distress report on suspected kidnapping activities along the route.
The troops swiftly responded to the report, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their operation and flee into the surrounding area.
The rescued victims were identified as 42-year-old Haruna Rabiu, 25-year-old Mary Joseph and 29-year-old Bridget Gideon.
The victims reportedly sustained minor injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
Security forces have commenced efforts to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by troops under OPEP to disrupt criminal activities and protect communities and road users across Plateau State.

Troops arrest two suspected illicit drug peddlers in Plateau

Troops of Sector 1, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have arrested two suspected illicit drug peddlers during a raid operation at Jengre in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Zagazola Makama reports that the operation was conducted at about 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, following intelligence on the activities of suspected drug dealers operating from a hideout in the area.
During the operation, the troops arrested two suspects identified as 35-year-old Manasseh Musa and 20-year-old Awwal Ado.
Items recovered from the suspects included quantities of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, two mobile phones and the sum of N62,500.
The suspects are currently in custody for further necessary action and investigation.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security forces under OPEP to disrupt criminal activities and deny criminal elements safe havens across Plateau State.
