UI VC RACE: COALITION HAILS NEW GOVERNING COUNCIL, RAISES CONCERNS ON THE PROCESS

The Coalition for Autonomy of Universities in Nigeria (CAUN) has applauded the University of Ibadan new Governing Council for bringing integrity into the election process of the new Vice Chancellor of the university by ensuring transparency and due diligence.

In a statement by its National Coordinator Ayanteju Olaolu stated that the Coalition has been watching the John Odigie-Oyegun led council with keen interest in the steps taken thus far in ensuring that there is fairness and justice for all the contestants.

The Coalition urged the Council to continue to remain neutral by creating a level playing ground for all the contestants so that the best candidate will emerge at the end of the exercise.

It, however, called the attention of the Council to the forthcoming election into the Senate Representatives with respect to Prof. Peter Olapegba and Prof. Ezekiel Ayoola who were already compromised in favour of a VC candidate in the last exercise and need to be excused in the forthcoming election to maintain the integrity of the process.

“This is in the public glare in the university community as an SMS went viral from Prof. Ayoola meant for Prof Ayodele, Dean of Science but sent to Prof Ayodele of Ecotourism in error depicting the process already compromised in favour of a candidate.

The controversial SMS message is hereby reproduced: “Good morning. As promised, our two candidates for selection committee are Prof Peter Olamakinde Olapegba and Prof Ezekiel Ayoola. Pls campaign for them separately. And never link them formally with Prof Adebowale. Election is on 21 Sept. Thanks. Prof Ayodele.

“We thank God my Dean. We can see that God already answered our prayers. It shall be permanent.  Greetings to Adebowale, our wonderful candidate. His papers/ application is second to none. We shall celebrate today. Regards

We thank God”

Messages like the one above ahead of the election already prejudged the outcome of the election and thus tainted the process, which the Governing Council must guide against.

CAUN is of the opinion that many aspirants are not happy that another town hall meeting is being organised, hence the boycott on Monday.

The Coalition, however, appeal to the governing council to guide the integrity of the electioneering process jealously by looking into the issues raised in this statement.

Governor Buni Launch Construction of 250 Renewed Hope Housing Units

By: Mamman Mohammed

Yobe state Governor His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has appealled to the Federal Government to sell the 208 housing units in Damaturu to the state government.

He made the appeal today at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the 250 Renewed Hope Housing Estate of the Federal government.

The governor said the houses should be sold to Yobe state government “at 50 percent discount on the cost of construction to enable us further allocate the houses to the victims of insurgency on owner-occupier basis” he said.

“It may interest the Honourable Minister and of course this gathering to note that the construction of Green Economic City with the aim of integrating residential and commercial areas in a sustainable way to uplift the status of Damaturu as a modern city is in the pipeline”.

“We have as a matter of deliberate policy patronised local contractors, dealers in building materials, and artisans. We also patronised the state-owned Sahel Aluminum Company for the supply of roofing sheets. This is to create employment opportunities, contribute to the local economy, and to fast track the recovery programme.

“I, therefore, wish to appeal to the Honourable Minister to kindly consider our local contractors, Building materials merchants and artisans to locally source for the materials and manpower, to further give our people a sense of belonging and ownership of the Renewed Hope agenda.” Governor Buni said.

The governor congratulated and appealled to the contractors to ensure that they execute quality projects that would stand the test of time so that there is value for money, and to be of benefit to the people.

“I also urge the good people of Yobe state to extend our renowned culture of hospitality and cooperation to the contractors to ensure timely and successful completion of the project” Governor Buni said.

Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing, commended Yobe state government for providing the land, representing 30 percent of the project cost.

Represented by the minister of state, Engr. Abdullahi T. Gwarzo, assured that the project would be executed within the stipulated time frame for the beneficiaries to enjoy the project.

The new law passed on Thursday by Kano state House of assembly has abolished the five emirates established by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He emphasized that the signing of the bill symbolizes the restoration of the revered legacy of the Kano emirate, which has withstood the test of time of over a thousand years.

Furthermore, the governor urged the populace in the state to continue supporting his administration in delivering a multitude of infrastructural advancements that will propel Kano to greater heights.
