UMTH: Making The Good news As Centre of Excellence
UMTH: Making The Good news As Centre of Excellence

Recently I was at the National Productivity Centre (NPC) head office in Abuja when I heard some officers discussing University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and the achievements of Professor Ahmed Ahidjo. I told myself it was worth featuring. UMTH popularly known as (TH) in Maiduguri is the first Teaching Hospital in the Northeast region under the canopy of the University of Maiduguri.
This teaching hospital has over the years maintained its position as “Centre of Excellence”- its motto. It has attracted many researches and developments in her effort and primary objectives as institutional hospital in the field of medicine and teaching blown through Professor Ahmed Ahidjo the Chief Medical Director (CMD), a quiet gentleman, recipient of hospital administrator (2021), silent achiever in medical fields, who is today standing on the crest of medical radiology with specialty in Interventional Radiology first in West Africa.
In the course of writing this work, I did some findings on some Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria from the first generation to the third; which are the State Universities Teaching Hospitals (states specialist and general hospitals). The fact is that there is no Teaching Hospital as at today that has the latest modern state- of- the- art medical equipment in her specialist centres like that of UMTH. Her Kidney Centre, Cancer Centre, Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre are of international standard handle and managed independently by experts in these fields of medicine.

Pictures cited lately during the delivery of the Cancer equipment to the hospital tells me that the CMD Professor Ahidjo’s mind is now at rest. He has this to say “Good news. Finally the Cancer Centre equipment comprising Electra Infinity Linear Accelerator Brachytherapy and CT scan arrived at UMTH safely.
All of the 49 consignments are now in the Cancer Centre. It’s worth noting that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) gave us the approval exactly one year ago and it takes 9 months to manufacture such machines on request. I am elated that finally we have done it” he said with a smile. Professor Ahmed further stated that “the northeast which was the only geo-political zone without Linear Accelerator for Cancer treatment will have the service” he gladly emphasized.
One observer who has been following the trend of events in UMTH Mallam Hassan Abdullahi said “University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is the best in West Africa when it comes to medical productivity and services”. An insider who has worked with some CMDs said “our hospital has never seen progress in medical science and provisions of equipment”.
He went on to say “Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre is of international standard and the best in Nigeria. We are proud of Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, our able CMD”. Interestingly, what is so dear to the heart of the Chief Medical Director Professor Ahidjo going by his words and body language is the ongoing Children Centre of 150 bed capacity. Infact, the Centre shall be whbt I will call Children Medical Haven.
