US Reviews Strategy to End HIV Threat in 2030

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC) has reviewed its efforts to help Nigeria end HIV as a public health threat by 2030 and introduced its plans for an integrated health services delivery initiative.
This was done during its 3rd Biannual Program Performance Review and Stakeholder Engagement Meeting from October 17-19.
According to a statement on Thursday, the three-day meeting provided national and state partners and stakeholders from the 19 US CDC-supported states a platform to discuss achievements and challenges in HIV programming in the last year and plan for state-led HIV responses, coordination, and sustainability efforts.
The statement added that the integrated health services platform will serve to enhance these efforts and improve the overall quality of and access to comprehensive healthcare in Nigeria.
According to the statement, throughout the meeting, US CDC Country Deputy Director Suzanne Theroux commended national and state officials, implementing and development partners, and other stakeholders for their efforts to close testing and treatment gaps and help Nigeria get closer to achieving the 95-95-95 targets. She emphasized US CDC’s commitment to using science and data to guide the design and implementation of sustainable, comprehensive, state-led health programming.
US Chargé d’Affaires, David Greene said the introduction and implementation of an integrated health service delivery platform is a novel idea with huge potential in Nigeria. Building connections across diseases, responses, and routine health activities like immunization can only serve to strengthen the healthcare and public health systems in Nigeria and ensure efficient use of available resources.
Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Chukwuma Anyaike, the Director of Public Health also recognized the importance and effectiveness of partnership in the HIV response. He highlighted the continued need to close identified testing and treatment gaps and emphasized the need to use data and innovative technology to improve health outcomes in Nigeria.
The meeting was part of US CDC’s commitment to regularly review and adapt programming to meet the needs of the HIV response in Nigeria. The next Biannual Program Performance Review and Stakeholder Engagement Meeting is scheduled for April 2024.

Army, police rescue 12 kidnapped victims in Ekiti border attack

A Combined Army and Police operatives have rescued 12 kidnapped victims following an armed attack by suspected kidnappers in Oke-Ako area of Ekiti State.
Sources disclosed that the incident occurred on Feb. 13 at about 9:00 a.m., when sporadic gunfire was heard near their base. Preliminary assessment indicated the gunshots were from an assault launched by suspected kidnappers in the area.
Army troops, in collaboration RRS,Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS), and local security outfits, swiftly mobilised to the scene. On sighting the security forces, the attackers engaged in a gun duel, but were overpowered and forced to retreat into the forest, taking two victims with them.
Through intensified operations, the security forces successfully rescued 12 victims unhurt, while one, identified as Jeremiah Gambo, sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in Ikole Local Government Area for treatment.
The troops also recovered an unregistered Boxer Bajaj motorcycle, a white Nissan Cabstar pick-up with registration number EJG-96XB, and a wine-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number KLE-575AE, all belonging to the victims.

Forest guard arrested for allegedly killing son in Monguno, Borno

A member of the Forest Guard in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State has been arrested for allegedly shooting his son to death.
Sources said the incident occurred on Feb. 13 at about 5:40 p.m. at the RRR Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Monguno.
The case was reported to the Monguno Division at about 6:20 p.m. by Maidugu Mustapha of Gana Ali Ward, who alleged that Mohammed Ibrahim Angoli, 28, a Forest Guard member, fatally shot his 24-year-old son, Ajiya Mustapha, in the back with an AK-47 rifle.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Monguno led a patrol team to the scene, where photographs were taken and the victim was evacuated to General Hospital, Monguno.
A medical doctor on duty confirmed the victim dead on arrival. The corpse was subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The suspect has been arrested and the firearm recovered as exhibit.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Maiduguri, has commenced investigation into the incident.

Woman kidnapped in Jos South LGA, search operation launched

A woman was abducted from her residence in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, prompting a manhunt by security operatives.
Sources said the incident occurred on Feb. 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when unknown gunmen reportedly stormed the home of Mrs. Geoffrey in the Gura-Topp area. Mrs. Geoffrey is the wife of Wing Commander Geoffrey, who serves in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The assailants reportedly whisked her away to an unknown location.
Following the report, security teams immediately combed the surrounding bushes and deployed additional personnel to the area in a bid to locate the victim.
Authorities confirmed that investigation has commenced, with search and rescue efforts ongoing to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted woman and the apprehension of the perpetrators.
