Like many others who want a better world free from extreme temperatures that bring about related unease for both the physical and natural environment as a result of climate change issues, Vice President Kashim Shettima is a firm supporter of a “green wall,” particularly in a developing country like Nigeria where policy on such cases has been swept aside for years.

The Vice President’s urgent speech and resolute demeanor during today’s Great Green Wall Day celebration in Abuja brought back memories of the times when he made similarly spirited speeches while serving as Borno state governor and commissioner for agriculture, respectively.

The VP Kashim Shettima planted olive trees in front of the building that houses the newsroom and other offices at the Maiduguri Government House as a constant reminder that an agriculturalist was there, as history may continue to recall with issues of climate change at the heartbeat of the trees now tingling to say that they were there because someone was also constantly thinking about the future in line with the climate change agenda.

As a result, Vice President Kashim Shettima’s speech at the inaugural meeting about the Great Green Wall Day celebration was nothing new. He had previously taught many students who remembered him from his time as a university lecturer about the economics of agriculture, as well as friends who were aware of his passion for the environment.

Kashim Shettima, the vice president, has always taken the lead on environmental issues. During his opening speech at the first Great Green Wall (GGW) Day celebration, he emphasized the urgent need to address climate change and noted that with extreme temperatures, drying rivers, endangered wildlife, and thinning forests, humanity faces the unsettling deterioration of climate-induced migration. This painted a clearer picture of the situations and needs for Nigeria on issues of climate change.

In order to stop desertification and start restoring degraded lands throughout the impacted regions of Africa, the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) was introduced in 2007. The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) was established in 2015 as a result of Nigeria’s dedication to this Pan-African objective, which was highlighted by the vice president.

In his remarks to the distinguished visitors at the State House, Vice President Shettima further urged all interested parties to view the Great Green Wall as “an emergency rescue operation.” He claimed that the mission was a life-saving task left to us by our forebears and that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had promised it would assure our survival as a group.

The first Great Green Wall Day not only highlights Nigeria’s dedication but also honors an important decision made at a meeting of the Council of Ministers. Nigeria is charged with leading the 10 member states by example as the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall’s (PAGGW) current president.

Vice President Shettima urged everyone in attendance to contribute to the success of the transformative endeavor as he concluded his speech. He praised the National Agency for the Great Green Wall and the Federal Ministry of the Environment “as they embark on this noble pursuit of a world in the color we desire.”

The Vice President is presenting his long-held desire for a larger scope that would improve Nigeria for the present and future while being steadfast in his beliefs on climate change challenges and how to overcome the necessities of combating severe temperatures.
