Yobe government organizes media training ahead of 2027 elections

The Yobe State Government, in collaboration with the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has organized a one-day media training on ethical and safety standards ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Declaring the workshop open, the state commissioner of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information, and Culture, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, commended Yobe State Governor Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, COMN, and his deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana Wazirin Fune, for supporting media development in the state.

Represented by the Director of Information, Alhaji Ali Musa Yawale. Bego called on journalists in the state for accuracy, justice, fairness, accountability, and peace, as well as to act as guardians of truth and peace builders during the election periods.

Mallam Muhammad Auwal Umar on his presentation on “Ethical and professional standards in elections, fact-checking, and investigative reporting.

Which he said were the key responsibilities of journalists during elections as well as outlined the challenges confronting journalists during elections.

According to him, the challenges faced include political pressure, propaganda, religious and ethnic sensitivities, and the personal safety of journalists.

Also, Mr. Rabiu Umar presented a paper on investigative journalism and fact-checking during elections. And Dr. Musa Usman on his presentation, “Safety, conflict sensitivity, and reporting in high-tension election periods.”

In his welcome remark, the chairman of the correspondents chapel, Mallam Nabil Balarabe, commended the Yobe state government for organizing such a workshop for working journalists in the state and urged continued capacity building for journalists.

Also in his goodwill message, the state NUJ chairman, Comrade Rajav Ismail Mohammed, has called on the Yobe state government to extend similar training to other NUJ chapels in the state, describing it as a welcome development.
