Zulum: Boko Haram left Borno with bank branches in two of 27 local governments

There are banks in two of 27 local government areas of Borno State as a result of over a decade Boko Haram crisis in the state.
This was disclosed by the governor of the State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, while ordering for the immediate establishment of branches of Microfinance Bank, as well as ICT centres across the all councils of the state to enable for exchange of old currency notes to new ones.
The governor gave the directive to the State Ministry of Finance and that of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation following the CBN’s policy on changing of old notes to new ones.
He noted that there are absence of banking services across 25 out of 27 Local Government Areas due to over 12 years of killings and destructions by Boko Haram insurgents.
The governor announced the microfinance measures on Wednesday in Maiduguri during an extraordinary stakeholders meeting which was attended by the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar Garbai Elkanemi, represented by the Waziri of Borno, Mustapha Waziri Muktar.
Zulum directed that where possible, branches of the microfinance bank should start being established this week in Monguno and Gwoza Local Government Areas.
Zulum said: “At the moment we only have two LGAs with banking services and these are Maiduguri and Biu. The distance from most of the local governments to either Maiduguri or Biu is too long”
He added that: “Despite a great improvement of the security in Borno, there are still challenges for banks to start operations. Banking is a very delicate industry and I am sure none of them is willing to take the risk of establishing branches in our LGAs for now. Therefore, to support our people, Borno State Government has to take the risk. I have directed the ministry of finance to ensure the recapitalization of Borno Renaissance Microfinance Bank to qualify it to have the capacity to open branches in all the 27 LGAs. This I believe will greatly alleviate the suffering of our people.”
Zulum also directed the Ministry of Finance to immediately come up with a template to organize and ensure people in rural communities deposit their old naira notes before the 31st of January deadline.
Zulum told the stakeholders that: “I have convened this meeting to discuss how our people in the villages can get easy windows of depositing their money to the bank accounts as stipulated in the CBN’s new policy. The Ministry of Finance is hereby directed to moblize the people and ensure nobody lost his money, you should facilitate ways through which people can voluntarily deposit their money into the banks in the remaining days.”
Zulum also directed the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to support mobile telecommunication providers towards improving their network coverage for internet connectivity across all 27 local government areas.
The meeting had in attendance, members of the Borno State House of Assembly, Commissioners, Advisers, Local Government Chairmen and other critical stakeholder.

Police arrest man for killing mother-in-law in Kogi over false theft alarm

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Yayu Musa, for allegedly killing his 50-year-old mother-in-law, Atayi Abdul, in Olla Community of Omala Local Government Area.
Zagazola Makama gathered that the incident occurred on Friday, July 25, at about 8:00 p.m., when the suspect lured the deceased to her farm under the pretense that thieves were stealing palm fruits from it.
Upon arrival at the farm, Musa reportedly attacked and slaughtered the woman with a knife.
Police detectives were immediately mobilised to the scene where photographs of the crime scene were taken. The suspect was arrested and is currently in custody.
According to police sources, the family of the deceased refused evacuation of the corpse to the hospital for autopsy, opting for immediate burial in accordance with religious and cultural practices.
The command has deployed joint security patrol teams to the community to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order due to rising tension.
Investigation into the motive behind the killing is ongoing.

One killed, three injured in communal clash over farmland in Niger State

One person has been confirmed dead and three others injured following a violent communal clash between Gpakpo and Gidigi communities in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
Zagazola gathered that the incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on Friday when residents of Gpakpo village, armed with Dane guns, launched an attack on Gidigi villagers at a rice depot.
Security sources confirmed that one Babayi Alhaji Soma was shot and killed during the attack.
Three others Hassan Ndaji, Zakaria Ya’musa, and Mutiu Mohammed, all male residents of Gidigi village sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Katcha for treatment.
Security sources immediately visited the scene, evacuated the victims, and restored calm in the area.
Security forces have been deployed to the affected communities to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.
Authorities say the situation is now under control.

Armed men kill herder, rustle cattle in Kaduna attack

Suspected cattle rustlers have killed a herder and stolen an unspecified number of cattle during an attack on a Ruga settlement in Joga Village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when armed men wielding sophisticated weapons stormed the settlement belonging to the late Alhaji Tambaya.
The sources said that security forces were deployed to the scene to contain the situation.
One Sani Muhammed Tambaya, 30, was found with deep machete cuts to the neck and shoulder. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
Security forces said efforts were ongoing to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen cattle.
