Zulum inaugurates 18- man publicity committee for Borno 2023 Census

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state has inaugurated an 18- Man Publicity Committee for effective mobilization of citizens to conduct successful census coming up this year.
Inaugurating the committee at the Government House, Maiduguri, on Wednesday, Governor Zulum said, the objective of setting up committee is to sensitize the populace on the coming 2023 census at the grassroots “and to achieve general acceptance, as well as to mobilize additional resources to supplement the National Population Commission’s (NPC’s) budgetary provision in the implementation of advocacy about publicity for the 2923 census.”
Represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, who double as the Chairman of the committee, said the committee is to also promote local ownership and acceptability of the 2023 Population and Housing census among stakeholders, especially at the grassroots which would serve as platform for receiving feedbacks and methodologies.
Kadafur pointed out that, the conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census is a top priority for the present administration, as it is borne out of the desire to bequeath an enduring legacy of evidence-based planning for sustainable development.
In addition, the Deputy Governor stressed that the exercise would enable the state government to have access to information on the number of public and private infrastructures hitherto destroyed in more Boko Haram insuregency, with a view to continue with the ongoing Reconstruction and Rehabilitation processes embarked upon by the present administration.
He said, the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the committee is “to carryout public enlightenment, education and solicit support for the 2023 census, its processes and procedures as well as undertake advocacy visits and strategic engagement with key stakeholders at the National, State and local Government levels to solicit support for the 2023 census.
“Other TOR includes; to mobilize resources material or otherwise for the conduct of the advocacy and publicly for the 2023 population and housing census, promote institutional collaboration and partnership between the commission, Government Agencies, community/ faith Based Organization and Civil Society Organizations on the 2023 Census advocacy and publicity; and to advice the committee on effective advocacy and publicity strategies in the 2023 Census and other related matters”. Kadafur stated.
He further said Housing and population Census when properly conducted will enable the government to know the size of the population, the number of people who live in the country and the structure of the society, which according to him, will in turn guide government in forecasting possible economic needs like electricity, schools hospitals, housing and food security among others interventions.
He noted that the committee members were appointed based on individual merits, experience and personal integrity and therefore, urged them to work hard to justify the confidence reposed on them by the Government, even as he assured that the Borno State Government will give the committee the needed support to succeed.
The committee has the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur as Chairman, the Federal Commissioner National Population Commission as Co-Chairman, while Comrade Dauda Iliya, Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Borno Council is also a member of the committee among other 15 others.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the State Director NPC, Alhaji Yerima Kachallah commended Governor Zulum for finding them worthy of the appointment.
He pledged that the committee will do its possible best to justify the confidence reposed on them.

Six Arrested as Farmers, Herders Clash in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested six suspects following a clash between farmers and herders in Waduku, Lamurde Local Government Area, which resulted in injuries to a villager and 11 cattle.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 2 when some herders allegedly trespassed into a rice farm and caused damage to the crops.
In retaliation, angry youths from the village attacked the herders, injuring their cattle and wounding one person identified as Righteous Boti from Nzumoso Village.
Security personnel visited the scene and held an emergency meeting with local stakeholders to prevent further escalation of violence.
The arrested suspects include Rabo Buba, 31; Ahmadu Adamu, 20; Stephen Pwagwadi, 17; Shadrach Simon, 19; Lot Gad, 20; and Righteous Boti, 27.
The injured individuals received treatment at the Tingno Primary Health Care Clinic and have since been discharged.

Suspected Thief Dies After Being Beaten by Man O’ War officer, in FCT

A suspected thief in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has died after being beaten by a security officer following his apprehension on April 2.
A Police sources said that a distress call was received at Karu Division about a suspected thief seen around Supreme Quarters in Karu at approximately 1:00 p.m.
The suspect was approached by security personnel who believed him to be involved in theft. When questioned, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly chased and apprehended by civilian security personnel.
Kola Oba, a Man O’ War officer, then reportedly took the suspect into custody and subjected him to severe physical abuse. The suspect later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the beating and passed away.
The sources said that the Police detectives were dispatched to the scene, and photographs were taken. The body was subsequently transported to the hospital mortuary for preservation.
The suspect’s identity remains unknown, and efforts are underway to locate his family. The officer involved has been arrested.

Sokoto: Man Arrested for Killing Woman in Domestic Dispute

A domestic dispute in Sagera Ango Village, Gada LGA, turned deadly on April 2, 2025, when Ali Garba, during a heated argument with A’isha Araga, attacked her with a cutlass.
The altercation, which escalated quickly, resulted in Ali Garba inflicting severe injuries on A’isha’s neck and other parts of her body.
Security personnel, responded promptly to the scene and rushed A’isha to General Hospital Gada for medical treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving care.
Ali Garba was immediately apprehended by the police and is in custody.
The case has been handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (DC CID), for further discreet investigation.
