Zulum visits aviation minister as Maiduguri airport upgrades to international status

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has assured the minister of aviation and aerospace, Mr Festus Keyamo, of his administration’s support as the ministry announced a plan to upgrade the Muhammadu Buhari Airport, Maiduguri, to international status.

Zulum gave the assurance on Monday during a visit to the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

“As the chairman of northeast governor’s and this is our first International Airport, I want to assure of the political will needed to ensure the implementation of this laudable stride,” Zulum said.

The governor emphasised that Maiduguri being a gateway for most countries around Lake Chad and Central Africa, would stimulate economic development in the northeast region by upgrading the airport.

Speaking earlier, the aviation minister assured that Muhammadu Buhari Airport would take off as a full International Airport on January 1, 2025, noting that all the takeoff preparations have been concluded and that relevant government agencies have been notified of the development.

The minister expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade of Muhammadu Buhari Airport, Maiduguri, stressing that of all the geopolitical zones, only the northeast has no full International airport in the country.

Zulum was accompanied on the visit by senators Mohammed Ali Ndume, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and Kaka Shehu Lawan, who represent Borno South, North and Central, respectively.

Borno APC Chairman Hon. Bello Ayuba, Deputy Speaker of Borno State House of Assembly, Engr Abdullahi Musa Askira and other senior government officials were also present on the visit.

Touray Condoles Nigeria on Passing of Buhari

President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Touray has condoled the government and people of Nigeria on the loss of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

A condolence message signed by Touray read: “It is with deep sorrow that the world learnt of the passing of His Excellency General Muhammadu Buhari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“On behalf of all the institutions of the Economic Community of West African
States (ECOWAS), H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS
Commission, extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, to His
Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and to the entire Nigerian people.

“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent.
May his soul rest in paradise.”

One Chance: Petrol station attendant found dead in Abuja after suspected abduction

A 23-year-old woman, identified as Grace Godwin, was found dead on Saturday morning in the Jabi area of Abuja, in what police suspect to be a case of abduction and possible murder.

Godwin, a fuel attendant at the Mobil Filling Station in Mabushi, was discovered unconscious by the roadside near Iya Abubakar Street around 6:00 a.m., according to police sources.

Detectives from the Jabi Police Division responded promptly and rushed the victim to the National Hospital, where she was confirmed dead by doctors on duty.

Her body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy. Her family has been notified and has positively identified her.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Grace boarded a commercial vehicle around 8:53 p.m. on Friday at Mabushi a vehicle suspected to be operated by a “one chance” criminal gang. The suspects reportedly contacted her family at 11:56 p.m. to demand ransom.

Police say they have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend those responsible.

“Investigation is ongoing, and all efforts are being intensified to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the sources said.

Cases involving “one chance” a form of robbery or abduction involving criminals posing as commercial drivers have become a growing concern in the Federal Capital Territory.

Nigerian Police arrest six suspected IPOB/ESN members in Enugu raid

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested six suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a security raid in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the arrest, which took place on Saturday around 4:35 p.m., followed actionable intelligence received by the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit about the activities of a notorious herbalist who allegedly prepares charms and provides spiritual fortification for ESN operatives at Oduma Achara.

In a joint operation involving SWAT, the State Intelligence Squad (SIS), and operatives from the Octopus unit, police stormed Oduma Achara and arrested the following suspects: Festus Godwin, Chisom Nwaigwe, Chidiebere Emmanuel,Ani Chibuike, Onyedika Njoku and Chibueze Akpaigwe, 23 (from neighbouring Obeagu Oduma).

The sources said all suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.
