Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc (owners of African Independent Television (AIT and Raypower Radio), Raymond Dokpesi Jr., has declared his intention to run for the Chairmanship of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), outlining plans to modernize the country’s broadcasting sector through regulatory reforms, industry support, and collaborative growth.
Speaking at DAAR Communications’ headquarters in Abuja, Dokpesi Jr. described Nigeria’s broadcasting industry as being at a “critical crossroads,” facing economic pressures, digital disruption, and regulatory challenges.
He stressed the need for unity among broadcasters to ensure the sector’s sustainability.
Dokpesi Jr. highlighted the importance of BON’s principle of rotational leadership, which he said ensures inclusivity and representation for public, private, cable, satellite, and emerging broadcasters. “Rotation gives all operators, regardless of size, a sense of belonging and a stake in the industry’s future,” he said.
On regulation, Dokpesi Jr. called for a balanced approach, noting that while oversight is necessary for matters such as national security and emergencies, excessive control should not undermine press freedom.
He also advocated for revising the National Broadcasting Commission Act, which he described as largely a holdover from Nigeria’s military era, and suggested shifting from punitive measures to incentives and self-regulation to improve standards.
He warned that the economics of broadcasting in Nigeria have become unsustainable, urging government intervention and new funding models to support industry growth. Dokpesi Jr. proposed strategies to attract investment, promote digitization, and foster innovation to ensure long-term viability.
Dokpesi Jr. outlined five pillars for his BON agenda: safeguarding national information sovereignty, promoting ethical content, enhancing inclusivity and accessibility, driving innovation through technology, and ensuring sustainable growth. He cited reforms implemented at DAAR Communications as evidence that such strategies could create value across the industry.
He called on broadcasters to embrace unity, strategic engagement with government, and forward-looking innovation to secure the future of Nigerian broadcasting.

Mob kills, sets man ablaze over alleged theft in Mubi North

An unidentified man was brutally killed and set ablaze by an angry mob in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The incident occurred on Jan. 28 at about 9:00 p.m. at Blue House, following allegations that the victim had stolen a motorcycle.
“The man was reportedly brutally killed and set ablaze by an angry mob,” the source said.
The Adamawa State Police Command said it was investigating the incident noting that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been detailed to conduct a discreet investigation into the incident.
The police assured residents that further updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses and appealed to the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Katsina police arrest gun runners, recover AK-47 magazines and ammunition

Katsina State Police Command has arrested two suspected gun runners and recovered six AK-47 magazines and 305 rounds of live ammunition.
Sources said that on Jan. 27 at about 1400 hours, police on stop-and-search duty along Zaria Road intercepted two men riding a motorcycle in a suspicious manner.
The suspects were identified as Shuaibu Musa, also known as Abba, aged 30, and Ahmed Sani, 27, both from Ruwan Godiya Village, Faskari LGA.
A search of their luggage led to the discovery of the weapons and ammunition. Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects procured the items from Jos for delivery to a notorious bandit leader, Isiya Kwashen Garwa.
The suspects and recovered exhibits are in police custody, while discreet investigation continues.

Bandits abduct businessman and two wives in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command is investigating the abduction of a businessman and his two wives in the state.
It was gathered that on Jan. 29 at about 3:15 a.m., Alh. Ali Mada, 60, a businessman, along with his wives, Zainab Ali, 50, and Rakiya Ali, 48, were abducted by armed bandits.
The attack reportedly occurred quietly, with no gunfire or disturbance heard from the victims’ residence.
Security forces promptly mobilized a team to the scene to gather information and begin investigations. Efforts to trace and rescue the abducted family members are ongoing.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
