As Insecurity Deepens, PAVE Launches 30-Day National Campaign to Protect Lives, Push Security Reforms

As Nigeria continues to grapple with worsening insecurity, recurring abductions and deadly attacks on communities, the Partnership Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) Network has launched a 30-day nationwide civic advocacy campaign aimed at mobilising citizens and policymakers to prioritise the protection of lives and strengthen security governance.
The campaign, unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday, is themed “Protect Nigerian Lives: End Abductions, Strengthen Communities and Stop the Politicisation of Insecurity.”
PAVE said the initiative seeks to channel growing public frustration over insecurity into sustained civic engagement capable of driving practical reforms, strengthening community resilience and improving accountability in the country’s security architecture.
According to the organisation, Nigeria’s security crisis continues to manifest through widespread abductions, violent extremism, organised criminality, attacks on schools and increasing threats to livelihoods, stressing that addressing the challenge requires not only decisive government action but also active citizen participation.
The network outlined an ambitious programme of activities for the month-long campaign, including a nationwide petition, strategic media engagement, state and national town hall meetings, youth and women mobilisation, as well as policy advocacy with State Houses of Assembly on ongoing constitutional discussions surrounding the establishment of state police.
While recognising the growing calls for decentralised policing as part of efforts to tackle insecurity, PAVE cautioned that any framework for state police must be backed by strong institutional safeguards to prevent political interference, abuse of authority, ethnic profiling and violations of fundamental human rights.
The organisation further emphasised that strengthening local government institutions is critical to improving community security, arguing that local councils remain the closest tier of government to citizens and are best positioned to support early warning systems, peacebuilding initiatives and rapid community responses to emerging security threats.
PAVE disclosed that the campaign would be driven through its national and state structures, alongside its affiliated platforms, including Youth Against Violent Extremism, Women Against Violent Extremism and Media Against Violent Extremism, to ensure broad-based participation across the country.
Calling for a united national response, the network urged Nigerians, civil society organisations, labour unions, professional bodies, faith-based organisations and community leaders to actively support the campaign, insisting that safeguarding lives and restoring security must transcend politics and remain a shared national responsibility.

Troops arrest four suspects over potato theft, raid criminal hideout in Jos South

Troops of Sector 1, Sub-Sector 12, Operation Enduring Peace, have arrested four suspects in separate operations conducted in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that three suspects were arrested at about 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, 2026, at Latya checkpoint for allegedly stealing Irish potatoes in Doi community.
The suspects were identified as Zion Danjuma, 20; Looji Augustine, 18; and Isah Mohammed, 23.
The sources said the suspects were subsequently handed over to Keystone B Division, Bukuru, for further investigation and appropriate action.
In a separate operation at about 10:20 a.m. the same day, troops of Sector 1, Sub-Sector 12, raided a suspected criminal hideout in Shen village, also in Jos South LGA.
During the operation, the troops arrested a 42-year-old suspect identified as Abdullahi Abdullahi.
The suspect has been profiled by the security forces for further action as investigations continue.
The operations are part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt criminal activities and strengthen security across communities in the Jos South axis.

Two women killed, another injured in suspected armed Fulani attack in Barkin Ladi

Two women were reportedly killed while another sustained gunshot wounds in an isolated attack allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani bandits along a road in Rakung village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 3:50 p.m. on Sept. 28, 2026, when troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace, responded to a report of an attack on three local women.
The sources said troops deployed to the location and discovered that two of the victims had been shot dead, while the third victim, identified as Mrs. Umbulet Philip, sustained gunshot wounds.
The bodies of the two deceased victims and the injured woman were evacuated to the General Hospital, Barkin Ladi, for medical attention and further procedures.
Following the attack, the troops activated a manhunt for the assailants and commenced efforts to track down those responsible.
The latest incident adds to the growing security concerns in parts of Barkin Ladi, where attacks on civilians and retaliatory violence have continued to heighten tensions between communities.

DSS secures death sentence against kidnap suspect over killing of three persons in Sokoto

The Department of State Services (DSS) has secured a death sentence against Ibrahim Usman, also known as Dan Iyali, over his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and killing of three persons in Sokoto State in 2023.
Usman was prosecuted before the High Court of Justice of Sokoto State, Sokoto Judicial Division, alongside other suspects who are currently at large.
The charges brought against him included criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide punishable with death, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt without provocation.
The case was linked to an incident in September 2023 in which three persons were allegedly kidnapped and killed in Sokoto State.
Following the prosecution, the court found Usman liable on the charges and imposed the death penalty.
The development underscores the ongoing efforts by security and justice authorities to prosecute individuals accused of involvement in kidnapping, violent crime and other serious offences across the country.
The DSS has continued to pursue cases involving suspected terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal elements through the judicial process.
