Askira/Uba, Hawul Federal Constituency: Inuwa Bwala honours APC party leadership call, Steps down for Tarpaya

By: James Bwala

Following the call by the All Progressive Congress, APC leadership in Borno state for realignment in its strategy for the party’s outing in 2023 former Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Inuwa Bwala has agreed to step down his position in seeking to occupy the green chamber at the National Assembly.

Inuwa, who was tipped to win the primaries and subsequently the election by many esteemed well-wishers and people from the grassroots owing to his connection with the people and electorates from the federal constituency.

Although a painful decision owing to the respect he has for the party and leadership, Bwala told his supporters to take his decision as the will of God and wait for another opportunity to serve them as he had done in the past.

His words: “I wish to place on record that I am overwhelmed by the support I enjoyed since I indicated interest in contesting for a position in the House of Representatives to represent the wonderful people of Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency of Borno State.

“I was particularly  moved  by the crowd that received me during my declaration of interest in Hawul. Of particular note is the contributions made by people to the tune of N12,253,000, to aid my campaigns and the attendant goodwill messages I received towards that quest.

“I went into the race with the solemn belief that I will lend my experiences, my exposures and my capabilities to the needed representation of our people. I also went in with the determination to make the difference in leadership by bringing developments to our area and placing Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency on the path of greatness.

“As you may be aware, there have been adjustments and realignment of forces in the contests, which necessitated changes in positions people seek to contest.

Accordingly, I have been prevailed upon by our leaders to equally make sacrifices by adjusting my earlier position.

“As a team player, I wish to respect the views of our leaders, however painful they may seem.

“However, in doing so, I foresee a situation where my actions may cause further dislocations to our collective goals, as such, I wish to announce my complete withdrawal from any form of contest for now.

“I am withdrawing from the race without any strings attached, rather to ensure a rancour free process that will consolidate our party’s hold on the polity.

“To this end, I wish to kindly request everybody who has made financial contributions to my campaigns to make available their account details for appropriate refunds. Where anyone does not wish to be refunded, I hereby pledge that the funds will be utilized in providing social infrastructure in choice locations in our area and in aid of the needy.

“I sincerely apologize to all those who have suffered any form of inconveniences by my actions and I seek your understanding. I plead that we take everything with equanimity, believing that God’s time is the best.

“I wish all those who are contesting for various positions the best of luck in the primary elections and subsequent general elections. And please continue to vote for  our party, the APC.”

The VP’s diplomatic activities serve as a catalyst for Nigeria’s integration into the community of progressive nations. His leadership exemplifies how effective international engagement can translate into tangible socio-economic benefits at home while projecting a positive national image abroad. Between 2023 and 2025, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima actively engaged in international collaborations aimed at fostering innovation and policy development within Africa. In 2023, Vice President Kashim Shettima played a significant role in advancing Nigeria’s international engagements, particularly through fostering collaborations between the Nigerian government and global academic institutions. A notable instance was his meeting with a delegation from the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa and the London School of Economics’ Philanthropy and Global Engagement division held in Lagos and Abuja. This engagement centered on partnership opportunities with Nigeria’s newly launched Presidential Initiative for Innovation, Policy Evaluation, and Research (PIIPER), which aims to enhance policy development through rigorous research.

Notably, in 2024, Shettima played an instrumental role in facilitating dialogues between Nigerian policymakers and international financial institutions, aiming to secure funding and technical support for various developmental projects across the continent. These dialogues were crucial in aligning Nigeria’s fiscal strategies with international best practices, thereby enhancing the nation’s capacity to implement impactful economic reforms. These efforts not only facilitated knowledge exchange but also helped in establishing a framework for sustained economic growth and development across the region. Through these comprehensive international engagements, Shettima effectively positioned Nigeria to harness global insights and resources, fostering an environment conducive to transformative economic policy-making and regional leadership.

The VP’s proactive engagement with international stakeholders has been pivotal in fostering bilateral agreements that prioritize technology transfer and capacity building, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global market. This strategic positioning also opened avenues for Nigeria to play a more active role in regional peacekeeping initiatives, leveraging international partnerships to enhance security and stability across West Africa. This multifaceted approach not only strengthened Nigeria’s diplomatic ties but also underscored Shettima’s commitment to leveraging international collaboration for domestic benefit.

In 2025, Vice President Kashim Shettima significantly enhanced Nigeria’s international profile through strategic engagements aimed at attracting investment and fostering development partnerships. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Shettima actively promoted Nigeria as a promising destination for investors by highlighting key infrastructure projects such as the coastal highway and West African gas pipeline, which exemplify President Tinubu’s modernization agenda.

By countering prevailing negative perceptions about Nigeria and Africa, he sought to reposition the country within the global economic landscape. Furthermore, his participation in high-level discussions with African leaders like South African President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored a commitment to regional collaboration and leadership cohesion on international platforms.

Shettima’s advocacy extended beyond economic diplomacy into human capital development during the 2025 World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings.

He emphasized the importance of data-driven policies under Nigeria’s Human Capital Development 2.0 strategy, advocating for sustained political will and equitable investment in people rather than solely natural resources. His calls for enhanced international collaboration aimed at improving data collection mechanisms reflect a nuanced understanding of policy implementation challenges and highlight his focus on inclusive growth strategies. Collectively, these engagements demonstrate Shettima’s multifaceted approach to positioning Nigeria as both an investment hub and a nation committed to sustainable human development.

When Shettima’s domestic initiatives test the consciousness of political leadership

By: Dr. James Bwala

Beyond the superficial rhetoric surrounding attendance at weddings and condolences, Shettima’s domestic engagements reveal a profound commitment to loyalty that transcends mere social obligation. In many political contexts, such public displays are often dismissed as symbolic gestures; however, Shettima’s consistent presence at such intimate events within his community underscores a deliberate strategy to nurture trust and solidarity among his constituents. This approach reflects an understanding of loyalty not just as political allegiance but as an embedded social contract reinforced through personal interactions.

Shettima’s attentiveness to family and community milestones functions as a tangible manifestation of reciprocal respect and support, which are critical in sustaining long-term alliances. Such engagements contribute significantly to consolidating political capital by fostering emotional bonds that formal political processes alone cannot achieve. Kashim Shettima: Former SGF Babachir Lawal still frustrated over Muslim-Muslim ticket

VP Kashim Shettima and Former SGF Babachir Lawal

Kashim Shettima: Former SGF Babachir Lawal still frustrated over Muslim-Muslim ticket

By: Dr. James Bwala

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, recently commented on the political dynamics surrounding Kashim Shettima’s role as Nigeria’s vice president. Lawal described Shettima as a “spare flat tire,” a metaphor implying redundancy or lack of significance within the political framework. This characterization appears rooted in frustration over President Bola Tinubu’s decision not to run along with him (Babachir Lawal) in 2023, highlighting intra-party tensions and personal ambitions that influenced electoral strategies.

Lawal’s continuous remarks can be interpreted as reflecting broader contestations within Nigeria’s ruling party, where key figures vie for influence and recognition. The refusal to consider him and the choice to go with Kashim Shettima as vice presidential candidate in 2023 arguably triggered dissatisfaction among certain elements, with Lawal’s statement emblematic of this discontent. I believe that Babachir Lawal’s critique of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s role in an interview recently with’ PUNCH’ Newspapers, where he allegedly said that’ Kashim Shettima is just busy attending weddings and probably condolence visits, reveals how personal grievances intersect with political maneuvering, shaping narratives around leadership choices in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.

Babachir may continue to preach this gospel and the group of speculators like him. But for the record and contrary to widespread speculation, Vice President Kashim Shettima frequently represents President Bola Tinubu on various official occasions both within Nigeria and internationally. While some narratives suggest that Shettima’s role is largely symbolic or limited to domestic engagements, evidence indicates that he acts as a robust proxy for Tinubu in diplomatic and political functions abroad. This delegation of duties aligns with strategic governance practices where a vice-presidential figure assumes representational responsibilities, thereby extending the president’s reach without necessitating his physical presence.

Kashim Shettima’s involvement in international forums underscores his active participation in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives under Tinubu’s administration. By attending summits and bilateral meetings, he not only conveys presidential mandates but also fosters investor confidence and diplomatic relations on behalf of the government. Such engagements reflect an operational dynamic wherein Shettima embodies the administration’s policy vision beyond national borders, challenging assumptions that his role is merely ceremonial.

The presumption that Shettima rarely represents Tinubu is inaccurate given documented instances of his frequent representation both domestically and internationally. This practice serves practical governance functions by maintaining continuous political engagement while allowing Tinubu to focus on critical national affairs. Recognizing Shettima’s substantive representational role provides a clearer understanding of executive collaboration within Nigeria’s current political landscape.

The VP’s effective representation in these roles is not only a testament to his political acumen but also an indication of the trust and confidence Tinubu places in his vice-presidential partner. His active engagement in these capacities highlights the strategic delegation of duties within Tinubu’s administration. His ability to navigate complex political landscapes and articulate the administration’s policies effectively further cements his role as a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s diplomacy and governance. Shettima’s presence at these gatherings not only reinforces the administration’s commitment to international cooperation but also exemplifies a strategic approach to governance that leverages the strengths of its key leaders.

Kashim Shettima’s diplomatic engagements, therefore, not only enhance Nigeria’s international profile but also underscore the administration’s strategic use of its leadership team to achieve a broader impact on the global stage. By effectively managing these responsibilities, Shettima not only ensures continuity in governance but also strengthens Nigeria’s diplomatic ties and fosters economic partnerships. This approach not only amplifies Nigeria’s voice on the global stage but also demonstrates a well-orchestrated internal synergy that is crucial for the country’s socio-economic advancement.

It is evident that Shettima’s active representation of Tinubu in various international forums and diplomatic missions is a testament to the administration’s confidence in his capabilities and vision. Shettima’s adept handling of these roles also signals a seamless transition of responsibilities that ensures no vacuum is left in Nigeria’s representation. This strategic delegation underscores the administration’s commitment to leveraging Shettima’s diplomatic acumen and political insight, thereby reinforcing Nigeria’s influence in international affairs.

The VP’s presence at key international forums and bilateral meetings not only amplifies Nigeria’s voice but also fosters partnerships that are crucial for the nation’s economic and geopolitical goals. Moreover, Shettima’s diplomatic engagements often align with Tinubu’s strategic vision, ensuring continuity and coherence in Nigeria’s foreign policy initiatives. This strategic partnership not only demonstrates Tinubu’s trust in Shettima but also highlights their shared vision for Nigeria’s development and international relations. Through these efforts, Shettima effectively bridges the gap between domestic policy and international diplomacy, ensuring that Nigeria’s interests are consistently represented and advocated for on the world stage. This collaboration between Tinubu and Shettima highlights a pragmatic approach to governance, where responsibilities are shared to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in achieving Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Indeed, on the contrary, Shettima’s role as a representative is not merely ceremonial but involves substantive engagement with international stakeholders, thereby reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to global cooperation and sustainable development. By entrusting Shettima with these vital responsibilities, the administration not only ensures continuity in its international engagements but also cultivates a robust framework for achieving long-term diplomatic and economic objectives. Therefore, beyond what the former SGF sees and pitched his tent, beyond the rhetoric around Shettima’s engagements, weddings, or condolences, the partnership that denied him the opportunity to be vice president is standing tall against the storms.
