Borno 2027: Fear grips political elites as the move to seek Governor Zulum’s dark horse tops discussion.
By: Dr. James Bwala
“Who is this ‘DARK HORSE’?” Several callers have asked me this question since my last publication on Borno politics. Some of these questions are coming from frontline foot soldiers of powerful individuals, who pride themselves as the gods of Borno politics; others are curious political analysts and onlookers, who wanted to know for a side corner gist on political happenings since that declaration by the governor. I have told some of them to ask the governor who gave the hint about his bold political stance and why he revealed it. However, what I know is that the political landscape in Borno State is becoming increasingly charged, especially in response to Governor Babagana Zulum’s bold proclamations regarding his future political ambitions. Following his declaration of stepping on “big toes,” a metaphor that signifies challenging entrenched interests within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the reactions from political elites have ranged from heading to open hostility to strategic maneuvering.
To fully grasp the extent of the political maneuverings taking place, we must first acknowledge the significance of Governor Zulum’s position. His tenure has been marked by significant gains in infrastructure development, security, and social welfare programs—an impressive record, particularly in a state that has faced challenges from insurgency and socio-economic instability. However, with success often comes resistance; the entrenched political leaders who have long benefited from the status quo are now feeling threatened by Zulum’s progressive vision for the future.

The phrase “stepping on big toes” resonates strongly within the context of Borno’s political culture. It suggests an intention to disrupt a well-established order, one that is often characterized by patronage networks and political favors that can stifle genuine progress. Such a disruption can evoke panic among the political elites who depend on these structures for maintaining their influence. The response to Zulum’s statements may lead to both physical and spiritual dimensions of political strategy, indicating an urgent and desperate effort to regain control and resist change.
Feedback from the public sphere, particularly through platforms such as News Net Global, Borno social media platforms, and other political platforms, reveals widespread discontent among the political elite. The discussions surrounding Zulum’s declaration demonstrate a palpable fear of his potential to consolidate power if he continues on a path of reform. Strategic questioning about his motives, coupled with appeals to traditional power structures, signals a brewing political war. In a state where loyalty and allegiance can dictate political survival, these elites are scrambling to secure their positions as they perceive Zulum’s moves as existential threats.

In Political Communication, we learned that a key aspect of any political battle involves the narratives constructed around leadership. Borno State Governor Zulum’s ability to frame himself as a reformist willing to confront established interests gives him considerable leverage in rallying public support. Moreover, the contrast between his governance style—marked by transparency, accountability, and accessibility—and the more opaque practices of his adversaries could solidify his standing in the eyes of the electorate. Yet, this very visibility might also serve as a target on his back, inviting opposition from those who feel their power diminishing as the situation is suggesting following his bold gambit.
In light of these political tensions, it is essential for Borno’s political elites to recognize that responding reactively to Zulum’s ambitions may ultimately prove detrimental to the political fabric of the state. Instead of clashing with Zulum in a bid to suppress his influence, they should consider the possibility of engaging with him in a dialogue aimed at collaborative governance. Embracing reform does not necessitate the loss of their political careers; rather, it could signify a transformative shift toward a more robust democratic framework that benefits all stakeholders.

For such engagement to occur, a roadmap for reform must be articulated—one that aligns the interests of the political elite with the broader goals of state development. This would require introspection within the APC and a willingness among its members to recognize that the grievances of the populace can no longer be ignored. By prioritizing community engagement, addressing corruption, and fostering economic opportunities, political elites can reposition themselves within a changing landscape while still anchoring themselves in the party system.
Introducing policy initiatives that directly address the concerns of the electorate can also help alleviate some of the pressures facing these elites. For example, focusing on youth empowerment programs, education, and skill acquisition can significantly alter public perception. Political elites must advocate for policies that resonate with the needs of ordinary citizens, allowing them to remain relevant even in the face of Zulum’s reformist agenda.
The pervasive use of media—be it traditional or social—should not be underestimated in shaping the political discourse. The conversations sparked by digital platforms can be harnessed to present a unified front among political elites, advocating for a shared vision for Borno that emphasizes stability and growth. This requires strategic communication and coalition-building efforts among various factions within the party, reducing the likelihood of factionalism that can arise from individualistic agendas.

However, this collaborative approach must recognize that power dynamics within the APC and the broader political arena are shifting. The emergence of new leaders who align themselves with Zulum’s vision cannot be overlooked. Rather than viewing these new entrants as competitors, current elites should aim to mentor and incorporate them into a new framework of governance that reflects the aspirations of a younger, more dynamic voter base.
Simultaneously, the power of grassroots movements must not be underestimated as well. The mobilization of civil society organizations and the active participation of citizens in the political process are vital avenues through which public sentiments can be channeled. Political elites must engage with these movements rather than dismiss them, understanding that they represent an important demographic that will influence electoral outcomes. By fostering relationships with community leaders and activists, elites can ensure that their voices are heard, bolstering their own legitimacy in a landscape where political authority is increasingly scrutinized.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, the stakes are high for all involved. The landscape is primed for a significant shift, one that could either reinforce the status quo or usher in a new era of governance. If Borno’s political elites choose to unite around a common vision that balances reform with the realities of an evolving political climate, they may well find a path to coexistence with Governor Zulum. Such unity can yield dividends that exceed individual aspirations, resulting in a strengthened political framework capable of addressing the myriad challenges facing the state.

As the political drama unfolds in Borno amidst Governor Zulum’s ambitious plans, it becomes clear that the time for decisive action is now. Political elites in the APC must move beyond their immediate fears and engage in a constructive dialogue that encourages reform while preserving their influence. By embracing a spirit of collaboration, they have the potential not only to safeguard their political futures but also to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development. The stakes could not be higher, and the need for enlightened leadership has never been more pressing. The choices made in the coming months will determine not only the outcome of the next election but also the trajectory of governance in Borno State for years to come.

The Bayelsa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Grassroot Movement (BSAGM), has described remarks of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri during Governor Douye Diri 6th anniversary thanksgiving service as hypocritical.
In his goodwill message at the 6th anniversary of Senator Douye Diri as Bayelsa Governor, Senator Lokpobiri guffed not disappointing the general public of usual reckless remarks, that no human should take credit as instrumental to the victory of Senator Douye Diri as Governor of Bayelsa.
In a statement issued to newsmen on Monday by the group spokesman, Mr John Peremobowei, the group condemned in strong terms of the reckless and delusional remarks of the honorable minister during the 6th year thanksgiving service of the prosperity government in Yenagoa.
According to the group statement, Lokpobiri’s thoughtless remarks is affirmation of his political career of ingratitude, and betrayal towards those that nominated him for various public offices undeservedly, from state to federal lawmaker, including two ministerial appointments.
“Lokpobiri battered political career of ingratitude was the reason why he openly fought his benefactor, Chief Timipre Sylva, who nominated him as Minister of State for Agriculture, in the last bayelsa guber election.
“Acknowledging an individual efforts, contributions in fulfillment of God’s purpose in another man’s life here on earth is not in any way taking the glory of God, but acknowledgement of whom God used to accomplish a predetermined task and purpose.
The group describing the honorable minister’s statement as delusional and self-deception, said he should be knowledgeable to comprehend the concept that God uses humans as instruments to accomplish tasks beyond their natural abilities on earth in fulfillment of purpose and destiny.
“Senator Lokpobiri who arrogantly takes the glory for the victory of Mr Wilson Ayakpo Dauyegha as house of assembly member representing Ekeremor Constituency 2, should have attributed the victory of the former lawmaker to God rather than himself, if it’s not self-deception.
“Unfortunately, Governor Diri seems to derive so much pleasure in the reckless statements expressed to appease him against those who worked so hard for his emergence.
The group urged Senator Douye Diri to be query of honorable minister’s characters in his government, saying the remarks were borne out of hatred towards those who worked so hard for his emergence as governor.
“If not for self-deception, hypocrisy, why did Sen. Lokpobiri attributed Mr Siminalayi Fubara’s emergence as Governor of Rivers to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and not God Almighty?
“In his thanksgiving ceremony after inauguration as minister, why did Lokpobiri attributed his appointment to Wike, and not President Tinubu who nominated him to the national assembly, or better still, God?
“Does God only exist in Bayelsa, and not Rivers? Lokpobiri’s thoughtless remarks are unbecoming as a public officer in the federal government.
“Invariably, the governor supporting the dishonest reckless remarks, he has deliberately sowed a seed of ingratitude by not acknowledging the human instruments of Dickson, and several others, and whosoever that succeeds him as governor will definitely tow the path of ingratitude.

2027: “Distinguished Vice President and Chairman of the National Economic Council, a very good partner on the journey of progress…” President Tinubu’s End of Quote on Kashim Shettima
By: Dr. James Bwala
The remarks made by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima cannot be understated within the four walls of Nigeria’s political narratives, especially around the presidency today. When President Tinubu unequivocally described Shettima as a “distinguished partner on the journey for progress,” he was not merely delivering a platitude. This statement signifies a broader endorsement of the vice president’s role and capabilities within the administration. It also serves as a clear declaration against the backdrop of swirling speculation and skepticism regarding the political landscape leading up to the 2027 elections. Indeed, these comments also reflect a solid commitment to continuity in leadership, clarify the governing vision for Nigeria, and ultimately establish that no one is poised to replace Vice President Shettima come 2027.

At the crux of Tinubu’s declaration lies a testament to the cooperative spirit necessary for driving socio-economic development in Nigeria. The phrase “a very good partner on the journey for progress” highlights the significance of teamwork in governance. Under Vice President Shettima’s stewardship as the Chairman of the National Economic Council, there has been a concerted effort to address the multifaceted issues facing Nigeria—from inflation to unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and security challenges. Their partnership epitomizes the shared responsibility that is crucial for any government striving for tangible progress.

Political narratives often take root in uncertainty and can easily be distorted by those who favor chaos over collaboration. The “peddlers” of complex, often negative narratives surrounding the presidency, as referenced by President Tinubu, represent factions that thrive on misinformation and divisive politics. The unwavering support exhibited by the President for his Vice President directly contradicts the narratives designed to sow discord. By clarifying the stability and unity within the leadership, President Tinubu sends a strong message: the leadership is united in purpose and direction.

The implications of such solidarity become increasingly significant as Nigeria heads into the 2027 electoral cycle. Voter sentiment is deeply influenced by perceived cohesion among leaders. In a nation where previous administrations have often faltered due to internal conflict, Tinubu’s endorsement of Shettima as an irreplaceable ally solidifies public confidence in the administration’s agenda. It serves to reassure citizens that the economic and political strategies currently being implemented are rooted in mutual respect and shared goals and wholly committed to their welfare and prosperity.

When the president emphasized Shettima’s role within the context of the National Economic Council, President Tinubu implicitly invited citizens to engage with the ongoing reforms and policies that are pivotal to the country’s future. The Council’s agenda, which includes but is not limited to enhancing Nigeria’s economic resilience, diversifying income sources, and fostering sustainable practices, directly involves the citizens’ participation. Tinubu’s description of Shettima as a “distinguished vice president” suggests that the leadership not only respects expertise but also values the contributions of seasoned politicians who possess a profound understanding of Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

The swirling narratives attempting to undermine Vice President Shettima’s position are indicative of a broader struggle between traditional politics and emerging expectations from the electorate. Citizens today demand transparency, accountability, and results—aspects that Vice President Shettima has epitomized through his policies and initiatives. The rhetoric deployed by Tinubu serves as a counter-narrative to those who would seek to diminish Shettima’s contributions. The president’s words affirm both leaders’ commitment to a forward-looking agenda, one that emphasizes progress over petty politics.

The assertion that “no one is replacing the vice president come 2027,” as I wrote sometime ago, is not merely a statement regarding personnel; it is a bold proclamation about the vision for Nigeria’s leadership. In a political arena rife with speculation, such clarity is essential. Potential candidates and party rivals are likely to expend considerable energy attempting to sway public perception in the build-up to elections in 2027. However, Tinubu has positioned Shettima as a stalwart force within the current administration, effectively shutting down rumors and speculation that might foster dissent or division.

This declaration also sheds light on the critical importance of experience in navigating the complexities of governance. Kashim Shettima has amassed a wealth of knowledge and insight through his various political roles. His tenure as governor of Borno State, especially during times of terrorism and economic strife, showcases his ability to lead under pressure. In a country like Nigeria, where socio-political challenges are ever-evolving, retaining experienced hands at the helm of government is paramount.

Indeed, acknowledging Shettima as a “very good partner” signifies an approach to governance that values collaboration over competition. Rather than fostering an environment where ambitions and personal aspirations drive wedges between leaders, Tinubu’s comments create an atmosphere conducive to teamwork. It reminds us that the goal of governance should always be the collective welfare of the populace, rather than individual accolades or power struggles.

I called this end of quotes. President Tinubu’s affirmation of Vice President Kashim Shettima as a “distinguished partner on the journey for progress” serves multiple purposes—it articulates a commitment to continuity in leadership, reinforces the spirit of collaboration, and lays the groundwork for upcoming electoral contests.

By addressing and dismantling the negative narratives spun by naysayers, Tinubu strengthens public confidence in the administration’s resolve to pursue a progressive agenda for Nigeria. Importantly, the unequivocal assertion that “a very good partner on the journey of progress” affirms the value of the experience of the vice president, Kashim Shettima, and the necessity of sustained leadership in overcoming the myriad challenges facing the nation. As Nigeria approaches 2027, the unwavering partnership between President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima becomes not just a political alliance but a beacon of hope for progress in the face of adversity.

Who is Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima?

Last night someone asked me this question while we listened to three series of radio interviews with Malam Ahmed Yerima on different titles: “akwai kallo,” “rashin tabbas,” etc., and this particular politician, who invited me for dinner at his mansion, said he is amazed by the calmness of the VP in all that has been going on around as we listened to the Hausa interview. I asked him how long he has known the VP. His reply was close to when he became the vice president. I told him the vice president reads. That was what made him different, and that is who he is. Rather than understand my reply, he got confused by my simple reply, and I noticed it, but we laughed it all off.

But on my way home, the thought flashes back just around Abatcha Barracks. “His calm demeanor, profound knowledge, and unwavering respect for people.” Indeed, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima. His character—not merely shaped by position but also by a deep commitment to reading and self-development—illustrates the essence of wisdom that transcends political ambitions. Yes! Vice President Kashim Shettima has cultivated a culture around himself that emphasizes the importance of knowledge through reading, the impact of this commitment on his leadership style, and why it sets him apart in Nigeria’s chaotic political landscape.

Kashim Shettima’s love for learning is not just a personal preference but a lifestyle choice grounded in the belief that reading expands one’s understanding of the world. He embodies the adage, “He who reads increases in knowledge.” This philosophy is not merely a reflection of his character; it is his guiding principle. Each night, he dedicates time to read at least a chapter from a book before bedtime. This routine fosters an environment of continuous learning, enabling him to engage in informed discussions and make decisions based on a well-rounded perspective.

The significance of Shettima’s reading habit extends beyond his personal development; it resonates with his approach to leadership. Through his reading, he gains insights into diverse cultures, philosophies, and governance models, which enrich his understanding of Nigeria’s complex socio-political fabric. Amidst the turbulence that often characterizes Nigerian politics, where reputations can be built or destroyed overnight, Shettima remains a steadfast figure. His ability to maintain composure, likened to shining brightly like the Northern Star, stems from his profound understanding of the dynamics at play in governance. He recognizes that politics can be unpredictable; yet, he remains true to his values, grounded in knowledge and guided by wisdom. This constancy earns him respect across party lines and among ordinary citizens, establishing him as a leader who prioritizes the nation’s stability over personal or partisan gain.

Shettima’s calmness during crises demonstrates his leadership qualities in action. For instance, during periods of violence and insecurity in his home state of Borno, he did not succumb to panic or despair. Instead, he employed a measured approach, combining both empathy for the affected communities and strategic planning for rehabilitation and recovery. By focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems, he instills confidence in his capacity to lead effectively. His methods serve as a model for other leaders in Nigeria, showcasing the impact of grounded, wise leadership in turbulent times.

By doing so, he cultivates a new generation of informed citizens who can contribute positively to society. Critics might argue that in a political system fraught with corruption and opportunism, Shettima’s approach may seem naïve or ineffective. However, it is essential to recognize that true change begins with individuals willing to challenge the status quo. By embodying the principles of knowledge, respect, and wisdom, Shettima not only influences those around him but also inspires a broader movement toward a more accountable and progressive political culture in Nigeria. His unyielding commitment to these values offers a counter-narrative to the prevailing cynicism often associated with politics today.
So, my answer to this question in its deepest appeal is that Kashim Shettima represents a refreshing departure from the norm in Nigerian politics. His culture of reading, grounded in the belief that knowledge drives respect and understanding, shapes his interactions, decision-making, and overall leadership style and defines the man we all called “Oga.” Indeed, in a world where distractions abound, Shettima stands as a testament to the transformative power of wisdom nourished through reading. As he navigates the political terrain, his calmness amid chaos serves as an example for current and aspiring leaders alike. Ultimately, Shettima demonstrates that embracing knowledge and wisdom is not merely a personal endeavor but a foundation upon which impactful leadership can be built, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.
