COAS activates operations centre in Abuja
The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Faruk Yahaya, has on Monday activated the newly-constructed Nigerian Army ultra-modern Operations Centre in Abuja to coordinate and control its operational engagements across the country.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, said this in a statement in Abuja.
Mr Yahaya commended the former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Tukur Buratai, for his foresight in conceiving the project.
He said the new operations centre would serve as a command centre, situation room, as well as operational briefing centre for the Nigerian army.
The COAS also expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his untiring support, saying the Nigerian army is better poised to fight insecurity in the country.
On his part, Mr Buratai commended the effort of the current leadership in ensuring the completion of the project.

Mr Buratai added that the earlier design of the edifice had been improved upon with several value additions that had upgraded the capabilities of the centre to international standards.
He said that the configuration was more befitting and highly professional in standard, saying that planning and execution were critical to the successes of military operations.
According to him, to have a befitting ultra modern operations centre is an indication of the army’s dynamism, seriousness and commitment to professionally perform its constitutional roles.
He enjoined the Nigerian army to continue to operate in collaboration with sister services and security agencies to fully attain its constitutional mandate.
The Chief of Operations (Army), Olufemi Akinjobi, said the centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that would enable it to serve tripartite functions of command centre, situation room and operations briefing facility.
Mr Akinjobi said the centre would afford Army Headquarters an enhanced reach and capability to quickly intervene, direct and influence ongoing operations.

The Nigerian Army troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA in collaboration with the police repelled a bandit attack on Soro Daya village in Kankia Local Government Area.
Zagazola learn that the incident occurred at about 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 19 when suspected bandits invaded the village.
The troops were promptly mobilized to the scene. On reaching Soro Daya junction, the team was confronted by the hoodlums, leading to a heavy gun duel.
“The bandits damaged the front tyre and side glasses of a police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) patrol vehicle before retreating into the forest.
“One female victim, Nabiha Mani, aged 15, was rescued with a gunshot wound on her thigh. She was rushed to the Comprehensive Health Centre in Matazu for treatment and later referred to the Orthopaedic Hospital, Katsina, for further medical attention,” said the sources.

Troops neutralise armed militia in Plateau after failed escape attempt

Troops of 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) have neutralised an armed militia in Plateau State after he attempted to disarm a soldier during an operation.
Zagazola gathered that the incident occurred on Sept. 5 during a follow-up operation to a hideout in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
A day earlier, on Sept. 4, troops had arrested the militia at Kaskra with an AK-47 rifle and 11 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to involvement in several criminal activities within Barkin Ladi and volunteered to lead troops to the hideout of his cohorts to recover weapons.
Sources said that while the search was ongoing at the hideout, the militia made a desperate attempt to snatch a soldier’s rifle in order to escape.
“He was swiftly overpowered and neutralised by the troops in the process,” one of the sources said.
The remains of the deceased suspect were deposited at a hospital morgue, while follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend his accomplices and recover more weapons.
The sources reaffirmed military’s commitment to sustain the momentum against armed militias and other criminal elements in Plateau, stressing that no effort would be spared in restoring peace and stability across the Joint Operations Area.

Troops arrest terrorist informants, logistics suppliers in Sokoto

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have arrested two suspected terrorist informants and logistics suppliers in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended on Sept. 4 during a fighting patrol to Yaka village by a quick response team.
The suspects, according to the source, are in troop custody for further investigation and action.
