A group of women from Mgbuji Eha-Amufu Community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State staged a protest on March 18, 2025, against what they described as incessant attacks by suspected herdsmen. The protest, however, turned violent as the women reportedly abducted a local community leader, Israel Mkporogwu.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the protesters, who gathered in large numbers around 7:30 a.m., became unruly and took Mkporogwu hostage.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Nigerian military personnel, police and neighborhood watch operatives, moved to the scene to intervene.
Security forces appealed to the women to release the captive and follow lawful channels to address their grievances.
However, the protesters rejected the plea, resorting to beating Mkporogwu with sticks and throwing stones at the security forces.
Faced with escalating violence, the security operatives applied minimal force to disperse the crowd and successfully rescued the abducted community leader.
He was later taken to Faithland Hospital, Ikem, for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
