Diasporans Are Important in Any Nation’s National Initiatives- Irish Ambassador

The Ambassador of Republic of Ireland to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Ryan has appraised the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), noting that the country’s diasporans are important partner in any nation’s national initiatives.
Speaking at the sixth edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit which kicked off in Abuja on Monday with pitching sessions for upcoming and start-up businesses, the envoy said he was not surprise about the abundant talents in Nigeria, adding that he was ready to do anything to encourage and support in this direction.
Ryan said: “It’s a really inspiration morning. Any time the diasporans come to gather to connect with one another, I think it is worthwhile and really interesting time for Nigerians in diaspora .
“I am very impressed with what I have seen and impressed with what I have heard. Not surprise at all. I learnt from Nigerians in Diaspora in Ireland that there are so many talented and motivated people ready to work with partners at home and also with partners around the world.
“Anything we can do to support and encourage that and we know from our own diaspora, the important role that they can play as a partner in national initiatives and I am delighted to be part of this, this morning. I’ve learned a lot already.
“I have learned also about pitching and about some of the sectoral and entrepreneurship taking place in Nigeria.”
On her part, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged Nigerians in Diaspora to put their money in businesses back home.
She states that there are abundant opportunities that is available in Nigeria, which can earn them money, without necessarily being present.
She pointed out that the NDIS is all about wealth creation by the Diasporans.
Dabiri-Erewa also applauded the pitching session of the summit which, she said will open doors for upcoming and existing small businesses to connect with investors abroad..
She said: “It is about how you can get money for your businesses and we have those at the Diaspora who are actually employing people here.
“You don’t have to be physically present. There are people who are earning money online through them.
“As we look forward towards that, we are saying we want to have Diaspora Direct Investment. You know, it is slow and steady but we are still doing it. You can see the passion in the country.
She noted that Diasporans are investing already, particularly in healthcare industry, ICT, food business, education. So we are happy with what we are seen here today.
Also speaking, Summit Coordinator and Chair, Planning Committee, Dr. Badewa Adejugbe-Williams, said the summit which will officially kick off on Tuesday, “Is about human capital development, building humanity, empowering the micro, small and medium enterprises and the ordinary market woman.”
No fewer than 2000 people have indicated interest in participating at the annual event.

Troops Rescue Kidnapped Man After Escape From Abductors in Plateau Forest

Troops of Sector 2, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have rescued a kidnapped victim during an offensive operation in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The troops rescued the victim, identified as 37-year-old Malam Adamu Umar, at about 6:45 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the outskirts of Kukawa village in Kanam LGA.
A military source told Zagazola Makama that Umar, an indigene of Furiyam in Kanam, was abducted from Duguri village in Bauchi State on Aug. 6.
The victim reportedly escaped from his abductors and had been wandering through Madam Forest before he was located by the troops during the offensive operation.
According to the source, the troops successfully rescued Umar and subsequently handed him over to the Kukawa village leader for reunification with his family.
The operation illustrated the continued efforts by troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE to deny criminal elements freedom of movement and rescue victims held in isolated forest areas across the region.

His Royal Highness, the Emir of Tikau, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammadu Ibn Grema II, PhD, has commended the Alminnah Charitable Foundation for executing the people-oriented giant project in the emirate.
Dr. Abubakar Muhammadu Ibn Grema II made the commendation today while commissioning the new Juma’at Mosque at Dugum in the Watinane district of the Nangere local government area of Yobe State.
He said, “Actually, we have nothing to say. We say Alhamdulila; thank you for everything you have done.” The mosque was named after the late emir of Tikau, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Ibn Grema.
Adding to that, they are looking forward to still partnering with you to bring more of this kind of project to our communities.
The royal father maintained that, and inshallah, we are going to collaborate and lease with you to bring all the necessary development immediately to our community.
“We know that you have brought many things, such as boreholes, and a lot of educational support to our citizens,” the emir added.

Troops Rescue 16 Kidnap Victims, Including Four Children, in Kogi

Security forces have rescued 16 kidnapped victims, including four children, following an operation against suspected bandits in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The victims were kidnapped on Aug. 9 when suspected bandits attacked commuters along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.
According Intelligence sources, information received at about 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 indicated that the victims had been sighted around Adumu community in Dekina.
Following the intelligence, troops of 21 Battalion and personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police, local vigilantes and Hybrid Forces, launched a search-and-rescue operation in the area.
The security forces eventually made contact with the suspected kidnappers and engaged them in a gun battle, forcing the criminals to abandon the victims and flee into the surrounding area.
The encounter, however, resulted in the death of one member of the Hybrid Forces, while a police personnel sustained injuries.
The rescued victims comprised six males, six females and four children.
The victims have been taken into the custody of the Nigeria Police, Ajaokuta Division, for further action, while security forces continue efforts to track down the fleeing kidnappers.
