IIP-SARS: Complainant narrates ordeal in Police custody

A complainant, Mr. Emenike Umezurike on Friday narrated his ordeals in the hands of the Nigerian Police saying that he was unlawfully detained for 58 days at the Cameroun Barracks Police station Aba, Abia state where the Police tried to extort N5 million from him.
Umezurike, while testifying in the case of alleged unlawful arrest, detention, inhuman and degrading treatment he brought against the Police, told the Independent Investigative Panel on SARS that while he was trying to market a landed property, the Police arrested and detained him at Umuagwo Police station in Ohaji Egbema in Imo state.
He also told ithe panel that the said property he was trying to sell came through one Johnbosko, who unknown to him does illegal business of framing charges against innocent people, and using the Police to detain and extort money from them in the name of bail.

It was at the Police station, he stated that a lady surfaced and claimed that I duped her sometimes in 2007, which made the Police prolong his detention, he stated.
According to him, he tried to defend himself by telling the Police that he did not know the lady at all, let alone duping her up to the tune of N5 million but his defense was not considered by the Police.
He further stated before the panel presided by Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN) on behalf of the Chairman, Justice Suleiman Galadima (rtd) that that he was teargased and beaten with rope and cane by Inspector Ebini (in-charge of crime), Cameroun Barracks Police station Aba, Abia state.
In view of the foregoing, he pleaded with panel to order a compensation of N200 million in his favour following the alleged human rights violations meted out to him by the police.
Earlier, the Police counsel, Malik Taiwo had prayed the panel to order that the matter be handled by Imo state office of the National Human Rights Commission where the alleged violations took place, for convenience sake.
The panel, however, declined to make such an order saying that the Police are one and therefore could defend petitions brought against them in any state in Nigeria.
The matter was adjourned to 9th of March of March, 2022 for cross examination and defense.

Armed Bandits Kill One in Attack on Commercial Vehicle in Sokoto

On April 3, 2025, at approximately 1130 hours, a group of armed bandits riding motorcycles, opened fire on a commercial vehicle traveling from Kebbi to Sokoto.
The attack resulted in the death of one Dan Gande Usman, who was shot in the head. The victim succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.
In response to the attack, troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA were deployed to the area to ensure sanity.

Bandits Attack Rijiya Village in Zamfara, Kill Eight, Set School Ablaze

A deadly bandit attack on Rijiya Village in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State has left eight people dead and a primary school set on fire.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that at approximately 1600 hours, on April 3, a group of armed bandits, heavily armed with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, invaded the village.
The assailants opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CPG) and six civilians.
In addition to the loss of lives, the bandits set fire to a primary school that was being occupied by the CPG members.

Police Inspector Killed in Terrorist Attack at Gwoza, Borno

A police inspector was killed during an ambush by suspected Boko Haram insurgents at the Police Mobile Force Training College (PMFTC) Camp Limankara, Gwoza.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at approximately 0600 hours on April 3, 2025, while a team of officers, including those from Mopol Training School Gwoza and various Mobile Police Force units, were on foot patrol.
Inspector Andrawus Musa, attached to 6PMF Maiduguri, was fatally injured during the attack. His service rifle, an AK-47, was taken by the assailants.
The victim was immediately evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The body has been deposited at the hospital for autopsy.
