Koton-Karfe Jailbreak: Five Fleeing Inmates Recaptured


…Nationwide Probe of Custodian Centres Initiated

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS)
has said five fleeing inmates from the jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, have been recaptured.

The NCoS in a statement on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar said the manhunt is ongoing for the other fleeing inmates.

Umar, in the statement, said: “The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirms a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which occurred in the early hours of Monday 24 March, 2024. During the unfortunate incident, some inmates in a section of the facility manipulates with the padlocks, leading to the escape of 12 inmates.

“Upon receiving reports of the attack, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR, mni, in collaboration with heads of sister security agencies including the SSA to the Governor of kogi State immediately mobilized to the facility, and personnel were deployed to secure the facility, restore order, and initiate a manhunt for the escapees.

“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice.”

Umar disclosed that the Acting Controller General of Corrections has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escaped

He added that: “Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences. The Service urges members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any useful information that may assist in the recapture of those still at large. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

“The Service assures Nigerians that the safety of custodial centers remains a top priority, and measures are being reinforced to strengthen security across all facilities. The NCoS remains committed to ensuring that correctional facilities fulfill their mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.”

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has ordered immediate probe into the unfortunate prison break incident at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.

The Minister described the incident as unfortunate, and vows to ensure all fleeing inmates are captured leveraging the service’s robust biometrics and already deployed technology solutions.

The Minister, according to a statement by his spokesman, Babatunde Alao, has also ordered the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility in Kogi to evaluate the situation, and commence a comprehensive audit to unravel the events that led to the incident.

He said: “We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation.”

Troops Repel Bandit Attack in Katsina, Pursue Fleeing Suspects

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have successfully repelled an attack by armed bandits who invaded Sabon Layi and Kakumi villages, firing sporadically, in an attempt to terrorize residents.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on Friday, prompting an immediate response from combined troops comprising Nigerian Army, personnel of the Police Mobile Force (PMF)and vigilant group in Kankara Local Government Area.

The troops engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat with varying degrees of injuries.

No casualties were recorded among the security forces or civilians.

Special Forces Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have intercepted terrorists attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along a strategic route in Gando Forest, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the troops, operating under Operation TSAFTA DAJI III Phase 3, launched an ambush when they encountered a group of terrorists laying IEDs.

On sighting the advancing troops, the terrorists fled into the forest under the cover of darkness, abandoning their explosives and equipment.

Recovered items include: One motorcycle, Three 25-litre jerrycans filled with IED components, 300 meters of sapper cable, one DET 33 electric detonator and one hoe used for planting explosives.

The Nigerian military has continued to maintain an aggressive posture against terrorists and criminal elements in Zamfara State, with Operation FANSAN YANMA and Operation TSAFTA DAJI III targeting bandit strongholds across Anka, Bagega, and Bukkuyum axis.

Notorious Bandit Leader Kachalla Dogo Wise Killed in Zamfara Rival Clash

A violent clash between rival bandit factions has resulted in the killing of notorious bandit leader Kachalla Dogo Wise in Zamfara State, sources familiar with the incident have confirmed to Zagazola Makama.

According to the source Dogo Wise was killed by another bandit commander, Kachalla Sa’idu Kanin Na Eka, following a dispute over ransom money. The deadly confrontation occurred at Dutsin Daru, Maradun Local Government Area.

Security sources revealed that the conflict erupted after Kachalla Dogo Wise allegedly seized ransom money that was meant for Kachalla Sa’idu Kanin Na Eka. The money was reportedly delivered by families of kidnapped victims, but Wise took full possession of it, refusing to share it with Kanin Na Eka.

Feeling betrayed, Kachalla Sa’idu Kanin Na Eka ambushed and killed Dogo Wise in retaliation, a move that has heightened tensions within the criminal underworld in Zamfara State.

“These bandits have no loyalty among themselves. When money is involved, they turn against each other. Dogo Wise made the mistake of crossing Sa’idu Kanin Na Eka, and it cost him his life.” sad the sources.

Meanwhile, following Dogo Wise’s killing, another powerful bandit leader, Kachalla Jimmu Sumoli, has vowed to avenge his death.

Jimmu Sumoli, a feared commander operating in Zamfara and parts of Sokoto State, reportedly declared that he would retaliate against Sa’idu Kanin Na Eka and his followers.

The killing of Kachalla Dogo Wise adds to the growing infighting among bandit factions in the North-West, a trend that could weaken their operational strength but also trigger more brutal retaliatory attacks.
