Police officer killed, firearm stolen in attack on officers in abia state

Tragedy struck in Abia State on May 6, 2025, when gunmen ambushed a team of police officers, resulting in the death of one officer and the theft of a firearm.

Police sources told Zagazola Makama that at around 8:30 p.m., a team of officers, including ASP Victor Eze and Inspector Nwanochi Ndubuisi, were returning from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when they were intercepted by five armed assailants dressed in combat attire. The attack took place on a narrow road after a filling station along the Port Harcourt–Aba Road, Asa.

During the confrontation, Inspector Christian Gbaratee, was shot dead, while Inspector Ekoro Isong went missing. The gun stolen from Gbaratee during the attack, as well as the suspect who had been in custody, was taken by the assailants.

A prompt response by the police led to the recovery of a Toyota Corolla and other items, including expended ammunition, a laptop, and three traveling bags. Additionally, Inspector Isong later surfaced unharmed. The body of the late Inspector Gbaratee has been deposited at the Euro Allied Medical Center Mortuary for autopsy.

A search operation in collaboration with military personnel, is ongoing to track down the attackers, recover the stolen firearm.

Communal clash erupts between Gwer East and konshisha communities in Benue, several houses burnt

Tensions flared on Saturday between the Mbaiase community of Gwer East Local Government Area and residents of Igbinde Village in Konshisha LGA, Benue State, resulting in the burning of houses and destruction of property worth millions of naira.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident, which occurred at about 9:30 a.m., involved suspected militias from Mbaiase who reportedly launched an attack on Igbinde Village, part of the Mbagusa/Mbatser Council Ward of Konshisha LGA.

The sources said several thatched houses were set ablaze, and valuables were destroyed during the attack. However, no casualties were recorded.

Army troops of Operation Whirl Stroke with other security personnel were promptly deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Stakeholders from both LGAs, including traditional leaders and local council chairmen, have been contacted in efforts to initiate dialogue and find a lasting solution to the long-standing communal tension.

Confidence-building patrols and monitoring operations are ongoing in the affected areas.

Israeli national dies in Abuja hotel

A 73-year-old Israeli national, Avi Warshaviak, has died in Abuja after reportedly falling ill at a hotel in the Garki area of the Federal Capital Territory.

Zagazola Makama reliably informed that the incident occurred on Saturday, June 28, at Corinthia Villa Hotel, where Warshaviak was staying with his wife.

According to the sources, the deceased suddenly developed health complications around 9:51 a.m. and was rushed to Asokoro General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

The matter was reported by the hotel’s Chief Security Officer, Okorie Emmanuel, to the Garki Divisional Police Headquarters at about 11:23 a.m.

Following the report, officials visited both the hotel and the hospital, documented the scene, and transferred the corpse to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police sources say Efforts are currently ongoing to contact the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria for necessary consular procedures.

An agricultural economist by training whose love for agricultural transformation and development has never been hidden, as demonstrated recently when he visited the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan for an on-the-spot assessment of the Institute’s crops and resource potentials, Vice President Kashim Shettima today embarked on an assessment of the popular Adama Industrial Zone near Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

Farms visited by the Vice President for the on-the-spot assessment included the Adama Dairy Farms, Luke Avocado Nursery site, Shera Dibandiba Mojo Family Integrated Farm, Biyyo Poultry Farm, and the Bishoftu Pea Farm.

While speaking on areas of agricultural collaboration between both countries, the Vice President ordered specialised coffee beans seeds for massive production in Nigeria while also directing the immediate training of selected Nigerian agricultural extension farmers on the production of specialized avocado seedlings for the Nigerian market.

VP Shettima also sought an exchange of mechanisation technologies between both countries, stressing that the potential of both Nigeria’s and Ethiopia’s agricultural sectors was capable of capturing world markets, especially when fully harnessed and exploited.
