President Tinubu Commissions Africa’s First Renewable Energy College In Kogi

**Says Nigeria has assumed position of pacesetter in renewable energy capacity development across continent

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Tuesday, commissioned Africa’s first renewable energy college, the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, Osara, (BARECKS), and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State, describing the citadel of learning as a world-class edifice, completed to international standards.

He said while the difficulty confronting Nigeria, a country “abundantly endowed with sunlight, wind, biomass and water,” had been “converting its endowment into megawatts, and megawatts into jobs,” that difficulty will now be addressed by the college.

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, who commissioned the college on behalf of the President at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi State, conveyed the greetings of his boss whom he said had taken satisfaction in the completion of the project.

He noted that the Nigerian leader had always maintained “that a government is measured by the industries it plants and by the households those industries feed.”

Speaking through his deputy, the President observed that with the Barefoot Renewable Energy College and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant now open for studies, the question about whose hands should build and maintain Africa’s future has been answered.

He said, “This is the first institution of its kind on the African continent, modelled on the celebrated vocational colleges of India that turned unlettered grandmothers into solar engineers.

“If that method could light the villages of Rajasthan, it can light the settlements of Kogi, Ondo and Cross River. Nigeria assumes, from today, the position of pacesetter in renewable energy capacity development across Africa.”

Expressing satisfaction with the speed at which the project was completed, the President pointed out that while, as a nation, Nigerians have become used to foundation stones that outlast the men who laid them, the college kept its appointment with the people.

“Two years ago, we stood on this ground for the groundbreaking of this institution, with red earth underfoot and the ambition of a few determined Nigerians for company. Today, we stand before a world-class edifice, completed to international standards,” he added.

The Nigerian leader stated that the college was built as “a vocational and technical institution to close the widest gap in Africa’s energy transition” which, according to him, is the shortage of competent technical manpower.

“Our continent has never suffered a deficit of intention. We have suffered the scarcity of hands trained to execute them,” he added, saying the college will produce technicians, installers, operators and maintenance professionals with practical competence in renewable energy technologies.”

Noting that graduates from the college will earn internationally recognised certificates of proficiency qualifying them for employment, starting their own enterprise and competing anywhere in the world, the President said, “A certificate issued in Osara must one day command respect in Nairobi and in Frankfurt.”

He called on development partners, the private sector, international organisations and research institutions “to join hands with the college to expand research, innovation and technical training,” assuring that”Nigeria is prepared to host and lead such collaboration.

President Tinubu applauded the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, and the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, who he said carried the project from the drawing board to the commissioning ceremony through their persistence.

He also commended Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, the government and people of Kogi State for providing the environment that made the project possible.

Earlier, Governor Ododo said the inauguration of the college was a clear indication that Nigeria is on the path to sustainable development through investment in human capital.

He noted that the college will strengthen the country’s energy sector through capacity building, while attracting investment and creating opportunities for communities.

The governor commended the federal government for tackling the nation’s power challenges through strategic investments in the knowledge economy, describing the initiative as one that justifies continued support for the Tinubu administration.

For his part, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, described the project as a major investment in human capital development and job creation, stating that it reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy.

Dr. Udeh maintained that Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy depends on developing a skilled workforce in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, urging the pioneer trainees to uphold high technical and ethical standards as well as serve as worthy ambassadors of the institution.

On his part, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described the institution as the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He said the facility is equipped with smart classrooms, battery energy laboratories, a mini-grid simulation centre, energy efficiency laboratories, and other modern training facilities.

Dr. Abdullahi explained that the college will produce highly skilled professionals in renewable energy research and development in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Also, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Anaje, said the project will provide young people with valuable technical skills, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to national development, even as he thanked the federal government for locating the institution in the state.

2027 Polls: Gombe governor urges APC unity, grassroots mobilisation

By Elizabeth Ogunjobi

Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has urged All Progressives Congress (APC) members to unite and intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yahaya made the call on Thursday in Gombe while inaugurating the state’s APC Campaign Council and Campaign Advisory Council for the 2027 elections.

He said the party’s success depended on unity, cooperation and members’ ability to communicate its achievements to voters across the state.

The governor urged the party’s Reconciliation Committee to engage aggrieved and sidelined members to resolve disputes and strengthen internal cohesion.

“We must recognise that political success depends on unity, cooperation and respect for the party’s leadership,” Yahaya said.

He described reconciliation as essential to bringing members together, resolving disagreements and building a stronger party ahead of the elections.

“Our reconciliation efforts must be taken seriously,” he said, urging the committee to deliver tangible results.

Yahaya called on members to prioritise the party’s collective interests over personal differences and work towards common goals.

He also urged the campaign team to publicise President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s achievements, particularly road infrastructure projects across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

He expressed optimism that unity and effective mobilisation would strengthen the APC in Gombe State ahead of the elections.

Earlier, the state APC Chairman, Dantata Ndus, described unity among members as non-negotiable for electoral success.

He charged campaign council members to mobilise voters effectively and secure support at their respective polling units.

“Let your impact be felt at the grassroots, in your communities and wherever you reside,” Ndus said.

He urged members to adopt respectful door-to-door campaigns and communicate the party’s achievements without insulting, intimidating or disrespecting anyone.

Meanwhile, the APC governorship candidate in Gombe State, Jamil Gwamna, urged campaign council members to justify the confidence placed in them.

Gwamna called for deeper grassroots mobilisation, sustained cooperation and practical efforts to achieve the party’s objectives.

“I also call on all members and supporters of the APC to embrace unity,” he said.

He urged members to remain patient, strengthen relationships and support one another, describing unity as essential to achieving their collective goals.

Congo: 10,000 confirmed Ebola cases demands rapid scale-up – NRC

By: Our Reporter

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) calls for urgent scale-up as outbreak continues to outstrip humanitarian operation

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has now confirmed more than 10,000 cases of Ebola in the current Bundibugyo virus outbreak.

“The outbreak has affected eight provinces in DR Congo, placing an enormous burden on affected communities. The epidemic is currently concentrated in eastern parts of the country, but recent cases in Kenya and Nigeria have raised fears of a regional flare-up. Almost five thousand deaths have now been confirmed in DR Congo alone.

“The outbreak comes on the backdrop of a chronic and neglected humanitarian crisis in eastern DR Congo. NRC has been operational in the country for over two decades, and is taking part in the Ebola response, including in the most affected province of Ituri. NRC urgently calls for sustained and coordinated efforts to protect communities, strengthen access to essential services, and address the needs of people affected by the outbreak and displacement.

“As I move around Ituri I’m seeing just how hard the disease is hitting communities, and I am struck by how much more needs to be done to bring this outbreak under control,” said Silvia Beccacece, NRC emergency team leader. “Families here have been struggling for years as a result of extreme violence, forced displacement, and the lack of essential services. Ebola comes on top of that, at a point where many have exhausted their ability to cope with the additional challenge it brings. The fact remains that this response is in no way proportionate to the vast scale of the outbreak.

“Combating Ebola requires close cooperation between health authorities, humanitarian organisations, community-based organisations, and international partners. It is essential that the response is scaled up in a way that keeps communities at the centre and is grounded in local customs and traditions. NRC calls on donors and partners to increase their support for humanitarian operations in the DR Congo, particularly in areas affected by the outbreak and displacement.

“10,000 confirmed cases must be a wake-up call that this response is not getting ahead of the outbreak, and is not supporting communities with what they need to bring transmission under control. The warning signs are here for all to see: now it depends on whether leaders will take notice and take the required action,” said Beccacece.

AFD, BOI Sign $30m Deal to Unlock Finance for Nigeria’s Creative Sector

…90% of facility reserved for small businesses, women and youth entrepreneurs targeted

By: Michael Mike

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the Bank of Industry (BOI) have signed a $30 million financing agreement to expand access to credit for Nigeria’s creative industry, with at least 90 per cent of the facility earmarked for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The agreement, which includes a €500,000 technical assistance programme, is AFD’s first credit line dedicated to cultural and creative industries anywhere in the world, positioning Nigeria as the beneficiary of a financing initiative targeting one of the country’s emerging sources of jobs and economic diversification.

The facility, signed in Abuja during the visit of AFD Chief Executive Officer, Christophe Lecourtier, is designed to improve access to finance for businesses in fashion, design, textiles, music, film and audiovisual production, video games and visual arts.

Women-led and youth-led enterprises, as well as first-time borrowers, are among the priority beneficiaries of the programme, which seeks to address financing barriers that have constrained the growth of creative businesses.

The initiative comes as Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries account for approximately five per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provide livelihoods for more than 4.2 million people.

Under the agreement, the BOI will deploy the credit facility to eligible businesses, while the technical assistance component will strengthen the bank’s capacity to finance the sector through staff training and the development of financial products tailored to the needs of creative enterprises.

The programme targets the training of at least 70 per cent of relevant BOI staff, alongside the development of specialised financing products to better serve businesses whose needs may differ from those of conventional industrial enterprises.

The agreement was signed by BOI Managing Director, Dr Olasupo Olusi, and Lecourtier, who represented AFD, reinforcing the longstanding partnership between the two institutions.

Beyond expanding access to credit, the initiative is expected to promote financial inclusion, support skilled employment and strengthen the contribution of the creative economy to Nigeria’s sustainable and inclusive growth.

Its focus on smaller businesses could prove particularly significant for entrepreneurs seeking to expand production, acquire equipment, develop new products or reach wider markets but who struggle to secure affordable financing.

The facility also aligns with the Federal Government’s Destination 2030 ambition for the creative sector, as Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and harness industries capable of generating employment and business opportunities for its growing population.

The €500,000 technical assistance component is expected to complement the lending facility by improving BOI’s capacity to understand and meet the financing needs of creative businesses.

For AFD, the agreement represents an expansion of its development financing partnership with Nigeria, while the BOI is expected to use the facility to support enterprise development, job creation and economic diversification.

The two institutions said the programme would help remove financial and non-financial barriers to the development of Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries.
