GSU Announces 200 minimum score for Key professional programmes

By Hajara Usman

Gombe State University (GSU) has fixed a minimum cut-off mark of 200 for admission into Medicine and Surgery, Law, Nursing Science and Pharmacy for the 2026/2027 academic session.

Prof. Sani Yauta, Vice-Chancellor of the university, disclosed this to newsmen on the institution’s admission exercise on Thursday in Gombe.

Yauta said the university had also approved a general cut-off mark of 150 for admission into its various programmes, in line with the national benchmark.

He explained that the admission exercise commenced following the approval of programme-specific cut-off marks by the university Senate.

According to him, admission into professional courses remains highly competitive due to limited spaces and increasing demand from prospective students.

The vice-chancellor said 2,231 candidates applied for the MBBS programme, competing for only 100 available spaces.

He said that 1,187 candidates applied for Law, which has a quota of 50 students, while Nursing Science attracted 2,363 applicants for 100 spaces.

He said Computer Science received 1,241 applications for 200 available spaces, while Pharmacy recorded 967 applicants competing for 100 slots.

“Only about 4.5 per cent of applicants for Medicine and Surgery can be admitted, while less than five per cent of Law applicants will secure admission,” he said.

The vice-chancellor advised candidates with lower UTME scores to consider other programmes offered by the institution, noting that they also provide rewarding career opportunities.

He said programmes such as Public Health, Computer Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Physiology, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Pharmacology have cut-off marks ranging from 180 to 190.

He said the university has a carrying capacity of 7,000 students across its academic programmes but noted that demand continues to exceed available admission spaces, especially in professional disciplines.

He also outlined the institution’s admission guidelines, stating that admissions would be allocated based on Merit (10 per cent), Non-Indigenes (10 per cent), Discretionary Consideration (10 per cent) and Local Government Areas within Gombe State (70 per cent).

According to him, all admissions must be concluded on or before Oct. 31, 2026.

He said that the minimum age requirement for admission remains 18 years, except in exceptional cases where candidates below the age score above 300 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

He assured prospective students and parents of the university’s commitment to transparency, fairness and excellence in the admission process.

He expressed appreciation to the Gombe State Government, the media and members of the public for their continued support for the institution.

Troops Recover 318 Rustled Livestock During Offensive Against Bandits in Katsina

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of the 17 Brigade have recovered 318 rustled livestock during a major offensive operation targeting suspected bandit enclaves in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Military sources said the operation, conducted on June 17, was launched on two fronts to clear criminal elements operating around Tuga and adjoining communities.

The sources disclosed that Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions were carried out ahead of the ground assault, while air assets conducted precision strikes on three suspected terrorist locations to degrade the criminals’ capabilities before the advance of ground troops.

According to the sources, one column of troops advanced through Karaduwa, Farin Tafki, Saura and Radawa towards Tuga, while a second column moved through Sayaya, Gangule and Radawa to the objective area.

During the operation, troops successfully cleared several communities, including Karaduwa, Farin Tafki, Saura and Radawa, and intercepted 318 rustled livestock believed to have been stolen by bandits.

The recovered animals were subsequently moved to a military base for documentation and further action.

The troops also responded to attacks launched by suspected bandits on Tuga and Kuka Maidamisa villages. The attacks were reportedly carried out in retaliation against residents accused by the criminals of providing information that led to the rescue of kidnapped victims, including one Mrs Amina Abubakar.

Military sources said troops conducted further exploitation of the surrounding areas after securing the affected communities but did not encounter any additional significant threats.

The operation is expected to continue as security forces sustain pressure on criminal elements operating within the area.
