Tinubu Committed To Improving Lives Of Vulnerable Nigerians, Says Shettima

By: Our Reporter

Vice President Kashim Shettima has restated President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and his administration’s focus on improving the socio-economic conditions of Nigerians living in the most vulnerable communities in the country.

He spoke on Tuesday when the Presidential Committee on Flood Mitigation, Adaptation, Preparedness and Response submitted a comprehensive report to him at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The committee’s report outlines a roadmap for improving the country’s flood response and preparedness.

The report is based on the findings of three previous and ongoing assignments, including the National Economic Council Ad hoc Committee Report on Flood (ongoing), the National Flood Emergency, Preparedness and Response Plan (2022), and the Report of the Presidential Committee on Development of Comprehensive Plan of Action for Preventing Flood Disasters in Nigeria (2022).

At the formal presentation of the committee’s report, the Vice President gave a definite position to speculations about the reality or otherwise of the impact of climate change in Nigeria.

He said, “Climate change is real and the existential threat it poses is glaring at us every day, from the extreme events being witnessed across the globe to the devastating climate facing Africa. Africa is disproportionately impacted and bringing it home to Nigeria, we have been witnessing drought, flood, etc. The saying on the climate crisis is that it is either too much (floods), too little (drought) or too polluted.

“We are all gathered to find a solution for the “too much” scenario that is flooding. Flood events have, in the past, affected communities with devastating impacts on livelihoods, people and the environment with loss of lives witnessed in some cases such as the last flood witnessed in 2022″.

Describing the report as a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, VP Shettima stated categorically that the Tinubu administration is focused on improving the socio-economic conditions of Nigeria’s most vulnerable communities.

The Vice President noted that in drafting the report, the committee was guided by science and forecasts from agencies such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

The report, according to him, identifies vulnerable communities prone to flooding and presents a roadmap with recommendations to address the issue.

Commending the committee for its hard work and dedication, Sen. Shettima said, “I would like to start by thanking this Committee for the hard work, commitment and dedication put in to develop the report.

“I particularly thank everyone for the time put in to deliver this assignment within the 7 days that I directed when we first met at this very chamber, which meant you all had to work through the weekend. The mandate was clear and it was delivered.”

The VP also directed the committee to present the report to the National Economic Council (NEC) for further deliberations and possible ascension by the council.

Earlier in his presentation, Prof. Emmanuel Adanu, the Director General of the National Water Resources Institute, a member of the Presidential Committee and Chairman of the Technical Working Group spoke about the major causes of flooding in Nigeria and the strategies for mitigating its impact.

He said the ultimate objective of the work of the committee is “to protect the nation from the devastating impacts of floods, safeguarding human lives and property while promoting the sustainable conservation and enhancement of water-related ecosystems.”

Prof. Adanu, however, noted that beyond the efforts of stakeholders in the public and private sectors, individuals and communities are required to pay attention to issues relating to drainage maintenance and healthy environmental practices.

Joint Task Force North West Clarifies Reports on Jet Strike in Sokoto

By: ABUBAKAR ABDULLAHI

The Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma has addressed recent reports concerning a military fighter jet allegedly bombing civilian structures in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions. This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organization, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

Given the serious nature of these operations, the public is urged to rely on confirmed information to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic. There is a significant risk that terrorist groups may attempt to undermine military successes through media disinformation, necessitating caution concerning unverified claims, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.

Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.

FACT CHECK: Claims of Airstrikes on Innocent Villagers in Silame LGA Found to Be False

By Zagazola Makama

Reports circulating about alleged airstrikes on innocent villagers in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, two communities in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State, have been found to be false.

Contrary to the claims that over ten villagers were killed and several others injured during an airstrike, the locations targeted in the airstrikes were identified as known hideouts of the Lakurawa bandits. These communities in question had been largely abandoned by their original residents due to persistent banditry and were subsequently repurposed as enclaves for criminal activities.

Intelligence sources contacted by Zagazola confirmed that the airstrikes were the result of weeks of intelligence gathering and careful surveillance of the bandits’ movements.

The sources said “We received consistent intelligence reports from the Sokoto State Government and security agencies regarding the activities of the Lakurawa terrorists in the area. Before the operation, independent reconnaissance and intelligence gathering missions were carried out to confirm the targets and avoid collateral damage. Precision is always our priority in air operations.”

The source further stated: “Today’s airstrikes specifically targeted identified hideouts of the Lakurawas. We cannot carry out any strikes without days of monitoring and verification. This is a normal practice in air operations so as to achieve precision in attacking our intended targets. These locations were no longer inhabited by their original residents, making it impossible for innocent civilians to be affected.”

“I can comfirmed to you that no innocent civilians were affected, as these locations were no longer inhabited by their original residents. “The operation was executed precisely to eliminate bandit hideouts that had been terrorizing the region.”he said.

Further verification by Zagazola corroborates that the targeted sites were active bandit hideouts and not populated villages. The observation also confirmed that the bandits had been chased to the locations following a sustained military operation aimed at dismantling their networks.

Additionally, there were no reports of casualties among civilians, no burials conducted, and no families reported missing loved ones to local authorities.

The Chairman of Silame LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, acknowledged the airstrikes in the location but refrained from confirming any civilian casualties, stating that the area had been under assessment.

“It’s clear that the Chairman doesn’t have complete information about the situation,” the source added.
