TRIBUTE: Alhaji Ibrahim Maina Damcida Just Like Yesterday
By: Barrister Musa Adamu
It is exactly 10 years ago when we missed Alh Ibrahim Maina Damcida, one of the most quintessential and illustrious sons of Biu to the Dana crash, but his memory still lingers with us. May ALLAH grant Alhaji Damcida eternal rest in Al Jannatul Firdaus. We have sorely missed his gentle smile, his kindheartedness, generosity, patriotism, empathy and good leadership qualities. We always feel the vacuum amongst the people of Biu where he came from.
He was always a beacon of hope to the extent that whenever there was any difficult and crucial decision to be taken, his ruling on such issues always became binding. ALLAH has continued to bless and protect his immediate family who has faced the reality of the loss of their dear father and husband.
When he initiated the stationing of the Nigerian Army Barracks at Biu, many did not see the strategic foresight and reason behind such a move, as it turned out later that the Biu Barracks was one of the many reasons why the Boko Haram were unable to penetrate Biu. A very committed family man who loves his family and anyone that comes into contact with him, he respected and appreciated people, particularly those who he saw as enterprising, and gave his support to people with great ideas.
His commitment to his friends knew no bounds. He boarded the ill fated Dana Airline after attending a book launch of his bosom friend Professor Shehu. He had a midas touch that whatever he touches turns into prosperity. As a civil servant, his era heralded the golden age of public service, when he and his contemporaries were referred to as the Super Permanent Secretaries.
As an investor, his investment acumen stood him out in the corporate world. For this reason, most of the blue chip companies considered it a privilege to have his name on their board. He kept watch on politics and was a strategic influencer from time behind the scenes.
During the first republic he played a very vital role towards the election of Alh Ibrahim Biu. During Shagari’s era in the second republic, he was a key foundation member of the NPN but refused to take any political office. He was content to be appointed Chairman Nigerian Agricultural Bank because of his belief in the strategic importance of the Bank to the economy of Nigeria. He together with Alhaji Aminu Dantata were members of Ajiya Investment, a foundation outfit of NPN which consisted mainly of men of honesty and integrity.

The loss of great men like Alh Damcida is a big loss to this country, the north and Borno State. The leadership vacuum is one reason for the exacerbation of the persistent security problem of Boko Haram in the North East and banditry and kidnapping in the North Central and North West. Those problems degenerated to the present state because of the paucity of leadership with high strategic approach in the North as most are now self-centered.
We pray to ALLAH to grant his wife, children, the people of Biu, Borno and Nigeria the kind of leadership to overcome the loss of this illustrious man.
He was very close to then President Obasanjo but refused to participate in partisan politics. He was Federal Permanent Secretary Works while Obasanjo was his Federal Commissioner.
He was a member of the royal family of Biu who ancestor was Yamtra oula the founder of the dynasty of Biu. He was very supportive to the throne and contributed financially and politically to the dynasty. Despite that, he continued doing what he cherished most, business and entrepreneurship.
At the same time, it is with deep sorrow that we mourn the death of Hajiya Falmata Kur Mohammed, Kaltum Sanusi and other passengers who lost their lives in the ill fated Dana Airline crash. Like we pray in Hausa, ALLAH ya ji kan magabatan mu.

300 Articles in 2 Years: A Reflection of My Journey with Kashim Shettima
300 Articles in 2 Years: A Reflection of My Journey with Kashim Shettima
By: Dr. James Bwala
In his words, “James Bwala here has been with me through thick and thin.” This he told a group of permanent secretaries, who came to pay tributes at his home in Maiduguri. This powerful declaration embodies the essence of unwavering loyalty and steadfastness that characterizes my relationship with one remarkable individual: Vice President Kashim Shettima. Over the years, I have fought many battles to defend and promote the unique vision and transformative agenda he embodies—a vision anchored in progress, unity, and resilience. As I reflect on our journey together, it is crucial to highlight the enduring significance of this bond, forged in the fires of mutual respect and brotherhood.
Kashim Shettima is not merely a politician nor a fleeting public figure; he is an embodiment of an era—a leading character in the unfolding political struggle in Nigeria today. In the last two years alone, a good friend, Zagazola Makama, the custodian of the written news about happenings in the Northeast, reminded me that I have penned over 300 articles dedicated to elucidating the nuances of his (Kashim Shettima’s) leadership and the profound impact of his policies. For me it was much more than that in two years, but that is what my friend acknowledged, and since he was speaking of the last two years, I go with him. Each piece that I wrote serves as a testament to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s indomitable spirit and relentless pursuit of a better Nigeria, sketching a portrait of a man who is both humble and exceptional. Many may wonder why I dedicate so much time and effort to writing about one person. I have heard so many questions such as these, and he also answered some in his usual character. For me, the answer lies in the unwavering belief that his vision for Nigeria resonates deeply with the aspirations of our people.

The political landscape in Nigeria is fraught with challenges, both historical and contemporary. Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Shettima’s leadership shines through, illuminating paths that many thought were closed. He remains an unbelievable and unbeatable force, not because he is without flaws but because he possesses the ability to learn from them, to adapt, and to forge ahead with commendable strides. As we navigate the complexities of governance and social cohesion, his presence offers hope and direction during turbulent times.
Our relationship transcends mere political allegiance; it is grounded in genuine affection and brotherhood. Growing up in Bulumkuttu, Abuja, in the city of Maiduguri in the 1980s—the late Usman Alkali’s roots should be a story for another day. Our lives have been intertwined, creating a bond that echoes through the corridors of time. This connection is a product of shared experiences, aspirations, and a collective understanding of the challenges facing our society. It is vital for those constantly asking questions about our affiliation to understand that the strength of our relationship is fashioned on mutual respect and brotherly love. Through the ups and downs, we have been there for each other—through thick and thin, as he would put it.

Shettima’s journey into politics is emblematic of overcoming adversity. From his early days in politics to his ascent as a key player in Nigerian politics, he has consistently demonstrated resilience and an unwavering commitment to service. His tenure as the governor of Borno State is a remarkable chapter, showcasing his ability to lead in one of the most challenging environments in the country. His strategies in addressing the Boko Haram insurgency were groundbreaking, focusing on rebuilding lives and communities rather than merely responding with military might. This approach revealed his understanding of the deeper socio-economic issues at play, proving that good governance goes beyond immediate crisis management—it requires vision, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
Throughout my writings, I have sought to capture these nuances, delving into the various dimensions of his leadership and the subsequent impact on the populace. Each article reflects not only my admiration for his work but also the urgent need for the public to recognize the vital role he plays in shaping Nigeria’s future. As I chronicle his journey, I do so with the conviction that informing the public about Shettima’s initiatives is a crucial step in building an informed citizenry capable of engaging meaningfully in the democratic process.

However, as a loyal friend, I must also acknowledge the complexity of political discourse. The terrain is often riddled with misinformation, smear campaigns, and divisive narratives that seek to undermine true leadership. These challenges only serve to reinforce my resolve to stand by Kashim Shettima. It is imperative to counteract negative rhetoric with facts and truth, emphasizing the tangible impacts of his policies and the overall vision he has for rejuvenating Nigeria.
Supporting Shettima is about championing values that go beyond personality; it’s about advocating for an inclusive and prosperous Nigeria. He understands that the strength of our nation lies in its diversity and the unyielding spirit of its people. His commitment to fostering an inclusive environment is reflected in his policies aimed at youth empowerment, gender equality, and economic revitalization. By prioritizing these areas, Shettima demonstrates an awareness of the multifaceted nature of Nigerian society and the necessity of embracing every demographic in our collective journey toward progress.

In defending and promoting Shettima, I am not simply endorsing a political figure; I am amplifying a vision for Nigeria that seeks to uplift every citizen, regardless of their background. His policies focus on education, health care, and infrastructure development—elements that are foundational to a thriving society. These initiatives echo the dreams and aspirations of millions of Nigerians yearning for progress and stability. Supporting such a leader is an act rooted in hope and faith in our nation’s potential.
The close bond between Shettima and me provides a unique vantage point from which to observe his leadership qualities. In our discussions, I have witnessed the depth of his insights and the sincerity of his intentions. His humility is striking; despite his achievements, he remains approachable and genuinely interested in the well-being of those around him. This quality makes him not just a leader but a true representative of the people.

Each battle I have fought alongside him has reinforced my belief in the importance of integrity and transparency in leadership. As a writer, I hold the responsibility to present an accurate portrayal of the man I believe can lead Nigeria toward a brighter future. By sharing our story and the tenets of his leadership philosophy, I aim to inspire others to engage actively in the political discourse and to advocate for leaders who embody the values of service and dedication.
As I conclude this discussion, I wish to reiterate my steadfast commitment to celebrating Kashim Shettima’s legacy. Our relationship is a testament to the power of solidarity and shared vision for a better Nigeria. It is essential for us to build bridges of understanding and support among ourselves, especially in a polarized society. This bond—fashioned on mutual respect and brotherly love—can serve as a blueprint for future collaborations, underscoring the importance of unity in the face of adversity.

In celebrating Vice President Kashim Shettima, I invite others to join me in recognizing the tremendous potential that lies within our nation’s leadership. Let us fight for the narratives that uplift and inspire, striving toward a Nigeria that honors its rich tapestry of cultures while uniting under the common goal of progress and prosperity for all. Together, we can illuminate the path forward, ensuring that every child’s dream has a chance to flourish in the Nigeria we aspire to build. And I thank my brother and friend Zagazola for reminding me how far I have gone in the last two years.

The Transformative Role of Leadership in Agriculture: A Tribute to Senator Abubakar Kyari
The Transformative Role of Leadership in Agriculture: A Tribute to Senator Abubakar Kyari
By: Dr. James Bwala
In an era where the significance of agriculture cannot be overstated, President Bola Tinubu’s heartfelt birthday greetings to Senator Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, serve as a testament not only to Kyari’s personal achievements but also to the profound impact effective leadership can have on national food security. As President Tinubu celebrated Kyari’s contributions in his recent statement, it is essential to explore the transformative role of dedicated leadership in the agricultural sector and how it shapes the future of food security in Nigeria.
Senator Abubakar Kyari stands as a paragon of public service, having carved out a distinguished career that has spanned various roles and responsibilities. His early service as a commissioner in Borno State laid the foundation for his extensive political career, showcasing his adaptability and competence across multiple ministries. This experience not only equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of governance but also instilled a deep commitment to the public good.

Kyari’s subsequent roles as a member of the House of Representatives and a two-time senator further solidified his reputation as a consummate statesman. His leadership qualities earned him the position of acting chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting his influence and the trust placed in him by his peers. Each chapter of his career underscores the importance of visionary leadership in promoting sustainable development.
Under Kyari’s stewardship, the agricultural landscape in Nigeria has witnessed a refreshing wave of innovation. President Tinubu’s recognition of Kyari’s efforts in championing mechanization illustrates a critical shift in approach, moving towards productivity enhancement and economic resilience. Mechanization is pivotal in modern agriculture; it increases efficiency, reduces labor costs, and ultimately leads to higher yields.
The reforms initiated by Kyari have been fundamental in addressing pressing issues such as food inflation and price stabilization. For too long, Nigeria has grappled with fluctuating food prices, often beyond the reach of the average citizen. Through strategic policies and effective implementation, Kyari has worked to strengthen agricultural value chains, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation while consumers are shielded from exorbitant prices.

This delicate balancing act requires not only foresight but also a commitment to creating sustainable pathways for growth. The recognition by President Tinubu of Kyari’s contributions indicates an acknowledgment of the intertwined nature of leadership, policy-making, and agricultural success.
One of the most encouraging aspects of Kyari’s tenure as the Minister of Agriculture is his dedication to encouraging youth involvement in agriculture. By institutionalizing programs that promote farming as a viable career path, Kyari is not merely addressing current challenges; he is actively cultivating a new generation of agricultural leaders.
Engagement of youth in agriculture is not just about sustaining the industry; it is about empowering young Nigerians to view farming through a modern lens. With the advent of technology and innovative practices, farming can be perceived as a lucrative business rather than a last resort for employment. President Tinubu’s praise for Kyari in this regard reflects not only an appreciation for the initiatives taken but also a recognition of their potential to reshape societal perceptions of agriculture.

While commendations for Kyari’s accomplishments are well-deserved, the pathway to achieving food sufficiency for Nigeria remains fraught with challenges that require continuous effort and strategic planning. The president’s prayer for Kyari’s renewed strength and courage captures the essence of leadership—the relentless pursuit of a vision despite obstacles.
To sustain the momentum generated by Kyari’s reforms, it is imperative to focus on several key areas. First, investment in research and development must be prioritized. Innovation in crop varieties, pest control, and sustainable farming practices will not only enhance productivity but will also mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture.
Second, creating accessible and transparent market systems for farmers is crucial. By facilitating direct connections between producers and consumers, there can be a significant reduction in intermediaries who often inflate prices to the detriment of both parties. This transparency fosters trust and encourages more farmers to enter the market.
Third, enhancing infrastructure is vital. Roads, storage facilities, and irrigation systems play fundamental roles in ensuring agricultural products reach markets efficiently, reducing post-harvest losses and maximizing profits for farmers. Investments in infrastructure will enable rural areas to thrive economically and socially.

Lastly, fostering collaborations between the government, private sector, and international organizations can create a robust support system for agricultural initiatives. Multi-stakeholder engagements can lead to shared resources, knowledge transfer, and capacity building, vital for sustainable growth.
The tribute by President Tinubu to Senator Abubakar Kyari is more than a birthday acknowledgment; it is a celebration of leadership that has the power to transform sectors critical to national development. Kyari’s focus on innovation, youth empowerment, and systemic reforms illustrates the profound impact dedicated service can have on food security in Nigeria.
As Nigeria continues to face the challenges of food inflation, insecurity, and the need for sustainable agricultural practices, the need for effective leadership like that demonstrated by Kyari becomes ever more apparent. President Tinubu’s call for renewed strength and courage for Kyari is not simply a prayer; it is a rallying cry for all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to engage, innovate, and work tirelessly toward the vision of food sufficiency. In doing so, they will not only honor Kyari’s contributions but also secure a brighter future for generations to come.

General Christopher G. Musa: A Pillar of Integrity and Commitment
General Christopher G. Musa: A Pillar of Integrity and Commitment
By: Dr. James Bwala
The story of General Christopher G. Musa stands as a testament to the virtues of integrity, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to service. This is critical in an era where leadership is often defined by power struggles and controversy. My introduction to him on his first day in Maiduguri as theater commander left an indelible impression; it was more than just a fleeting moment with a soldier—it was a glimpse into the essence of a leader who would redefine what it means to serve one’s country. Through my connection with Mr. Bodunrin Kayode and our editorial work at NEWS NET GLOBAL LIMITED, I have had the immense privilege of chronicling the life and times of this gallant officer. It is with great reverence that I share my insights into the character and contributions of General Musa, whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
General Musa’s entry into Maiduguri came at a crucial juncture in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. The challenges were daunting, yet he embraced them with a resolute spirit and a strategic mindset. Upon meeting him, I was struck not only by his professionalism but also by the approachable demeanor he exuded. This was a leader who understood the weight of his responsibilities and was committed to confronting the complexities of military command with empathy and clarity. Further exchanges with him were punctuated by discussions about the critical role of the military in safeguarding our nation, setting the tone for how he would navigate the trials ahead.
What sets General Musa apart from many others in positions of authority is his steadfast adherence to the principle of integrity. In an institution where the line between right and wrong can sometimes blur, he has remained a beacon of ethical conduct. His reputation, as chronicled through various articles and editorials, reveals a man who has never been found wanting—his decisions grounded in honesty and transparency. The stories shared by colleagues and subordinates alike reflect a mutual respect that transcends rank and status. General Musa treats everyone with dignity, understanding that leadership is about uplifting those around you while also holding oneself accountable.

In my professional capacity as editor, I have scrutinized countless narratives highlighting General Musa’s activities. Each piece reflects not only his military engagements but also his humanitarian approach. He understands that the battlefield is not just a physical space but a complex arena where the hearts and minds of the citizens must also be won. His initiatives in community engagement during military operations have brought hope and sustenance to many who suffer in conflict zones. The reports we published highlighted his efforts to forge trust between the military and civilians, demonstrating a commitment to peace-building that goes beyond mere tactical success.
The influence of General Musa extends beyond the immediate context of his operations. As someone who has engaged with retired and active personnel in the armed forces, I appreciate the impact of his leadership on both current and former military members. Conversations often veer towards admiration for his approach to mentorship and development of junior officers. His willingness to share experiences and lessons learned fosters a culture of growth within the military, encouraging young soldiers to aim higher and embrace the values of dedication and service.
In my assessment of General Musa, particularly the stories we exchanged among colleagues in the media, one consistent theme emerged: his understanding of sacrifice. He represents a generation of military leaders who have dedicated their lives to the service of the nation—individuals who have endured personal hardships and faced dangers to protect their homeland. His dedication goes beyond the call of duty; it is a manifestation of love for his country, a sentiment echoed by those who serve under him. It is this sense of sacrifice that has cultivated a loyalty among his troops that few can rival.

As General Musa prepares to transition from his current role, it is impossible not to reflect upon the profound impact he has made. His bowing out from active service symbolizes not just the end of a career but the beginning of a legacy that will be celebrated for years to come. We will remember him not merely for the battles fought or the accolades earned, but for the human qualities he embodied: humility, courage, and unwavering resolve.
To the people of Nigeria, General Musa’s name will be synonymous with honorable service. He has demonstrated that true leadership is not measured solely by victories in combat but also by the relationships fostered and the lives touched. His ability to connect with diverse groups—from fellow officers to civilians—has created a bridge that will allow future leaders to build upon his foundation of trust and cooperation.
As I salute him in uniform and as he steps into his next chapter, I urge all to honor his legacy by embracing the principles he championed. Let us acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who serve our nation, and let us strive to emulate the integrity he personifies. In doing so, we ensure that his contributions will never be forgotten; they will continue to guide us in our pursuit of a brighter future for Nigeria.
General Christopher G. Musa is more than just a military leader; he is a symbol of everything that is good and noble in public service. His journey is one of integrity, sacrifice, and exemplary leadership, leaving an imprint not only on the military community but also on the fabric of Nigerian society. As we reflect on his career, let us celebrate the man who stood firmly for integrity, who triumphed in every assignment, and who gave selflessly to his country. May his legacy inspire countless others to follow in his footsteps, embodying the spirit of service that he so profoundly represents.
