UN calls for respect, protection of Aid Workers, after Soldier kills an international staff in Borno

The Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mathias Schmale has called for the respect and protection of humanitarian workers for their courageous act in taking the train so to go deep into the fields to provide life saving Assistance to people in need.
Mr. Mathias was speaking following yesterday’s killing of a staff member of the humanitarian non-governmental organization Meědecins du Monde in Damboa, Borno State, which he described as deeply disturbing and sad.

“On behalf of the United Nations, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the aid worker’s family and to her colleagues.
“I also wish a speedy recovery to a pilot working with the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) who was injured in the deplorable attack by an apparently rogue soldier.
“All humanitarian staff working in north-east Nigeria deserve our fullest respect for their courage and commitment to stay and deliver life-saving assistance to people in need in often difficult and dangerous circumstances. Humanitarian workers must be protected.
“I laud the Government and the military’s efforts to speedily investigate yesterday’s incident and urge them to strengthen remedial measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.” He said
Recalled that on Thursday rogue soldier attacked humanitarian workers where an international staff and a soldier, which attempted to save her were killed in Damboa local government area of Borno state.
The sad incident have continued to call on the authorities especially the military to check on soldiers, who may have been traumatise as well as go into depression as a result of long stay away from family members.

Troops rescue four kidnapped commuters in Yobe, foil ISWAP terrorist ambush

Troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion under Operation Desert Sanity IV have rescued four kidnapped civilians from ISWAP terrorists following a swift counter-offensive along the Gashua–Azare highway in Yobe State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama on Saturday that the operation was carried out at about 6:10 p.m. on Friday, May 9, after intelligence reports indicated that insurgents had abducted travelers while riding on 15 motorcycles.
Quick Response Forces (QRF) from the battalion, swiftly mobilised to the area and engaged the terrorists in a heavy exchange of gunfire.
“The troops overpowered the terrorists, forcing them to retreat in disarray and abandon one motorcycle,” the source said.
The soldiers pursued the insurgents up to 6 kilometers from the ambush point, leading to the successful rescue of four abducted civilians. Items recovered from the scene included a pumping machine, a motorcycle tube, a plier, and three spanners.

FCT Police arrest two notorious armed robbers in Kurudu

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested two notorious armed robbery suspects terrorising Kurudu and its environs.
The suspects, identified as Hassan Adamu and Auwal Mohammed, both aged 25, were arrested on May 8 at about 2:00 p.m. during a targeted raid by operatives of the Scorpion Squad.
Police sources said that the suspects were linked to multiple violent robbery incidents in the area.
“One of the suspects confessed to a specific robbery at Angwan Hausawa, Kurudu, where a male victim, identified as Mohammed, was stabbed and later died from the injuries sustained during the attack.
Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives stormed a criminal hideout in Kurudu where the suspects were apprehended. A sharp dagger, reportedly intended for use against police operatives, was recovered during the search.
The suspects also revealed the identities of other members of their gang who remain at large and are believed to be armed.
The police sources said a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons.

Four persons have been killed by suspected armed men in Tse-Nyamkyume, Tombo Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, the Police Command confirmed on Tuesday.
Zagazola Makama report that the victims, identified as Matthew Mvendaga, Mernangwajume, Ushahemba Mvendaga, and a woman whose full identity is yet to be confirmed, were shot dead around 11 p.m. on Monday by gunmen suspected to have come from Guma Local Government Area.
The sources said that a top Police Officer was currently leading a combined team of conventional policemen and personnel from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) to comb the area in pursuit of the assailants.
The police sources assured residents that efforts were being intensified to apprehend those behind the attack and bring them to justice.
