2027: Can Hon. Muktari Betara Aliyu break the iron walls between the governorship seat and the so-called minority groups in Borno?

Throughout the past decade, Hon. Muktari Betara Aliyu has made a significant mark in the National Assembly, captivating constituents with his commitment to public service and advocacy for social reform. In the unfolding calls on plans and preparations towards the 2027 general elections and political aspirations of people occupying positions and those trying to occupy one, names of people like Hon. Betara Aliyu keeps coming on two grounds. One, that he is being prepared to become the next Speaker of the house and two, that he is positioning himself for the governorship of Borno state. Whichever way as he contemplates an elevation in his title to H.E. (His Excellency), driven by aspirations from his supporters, it is imperative to analyze his contributions, impact, and the rationale behind this ambition. However, here I will be looking towards his perhaps ambition to lead Borno state in the next election where I hope that this piece will help him take decisions about his choices. While some critics argue that his governance experience may be limited, a closer examination reveals a leader who exemplifies pragmatic governance, particularly in improving healthcare access and economic opportunities for the underprivileged in Borno.
Betara’s journey into politics is emblematic of a dedication to serving the needs of his community. Over the years, he has championed several initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare access, which is crucial in a region characterized by socio-economic challenges and health disparities. In communities where healthcare facilities are few and far between and where financial barriers often prevent individuals from seeking medical attention, Betara has proactively sought to bridge these gaps. He has advocated for increased funding for primary healthcare services and worked collaboratively with local leaders to establish health outreach programs that provide essential medical services to underserved populations.

One notable initiative led by Betara is the Community Health Insurance Scheme, which has enabled thousands of residents to gain access to vital health services. By significantly lowering the costs associated with medical treatments and consultations, this program has alleviated the financial burden on many families in Borno, ensuring that health is no longer a privilege of the affluent but a right accessible to all. Betara’s commitment to advocating for equitable healthcare solutions reflects a broader trend of progressive governance that prioritizes the well-being of the populace over political gains.
In addition to his focus on healthcare, Betara has displayed an unwavering commitment to creating economic opportunities for the underprivileged. His advocacy for grassroots development initiatives and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have had substantial effects on local economies within his constituency. He has worked to facilitate access to microfinancing options, enabling aspiring entrepreneurs to realize their dreams amid challenging economic landscapes. For many young people in Borno facing unemployment and limited opportunities, Betara’s initiatives represent a viable pathway toward financial independence and improved quality of life.

Betara’s engagement with local communities through town hall meetings and forums demonstrates his willingness to listen to constituents and incorporate their feedback into policy decisions. This level of accessibility stands in stark contrast to traditional political practices, which often leave citizens feeling marginalized and unheard. His approach encapsulates a progressive governance style that empowers individuals and fosters inclusivity. However, despite the accolades and recognition he has achieved, Betara is not without his share of criticisms. Detractors point to his limited exposure to higher levels of governance and question whether he possesses the requisite skills to transition into more influential roles, especially as he seeks to add the title of a governor to his name if the rumour making the mill is true. He was also penciled as an unrealistic comrade when dealing with people on individualistic support. It was counted against him as a reward for loyalty, which is a minus on the leadership roll. Some believe he can be self-centered and difficult to deal with over his sensitivity to those he believes are the right people to access his support. However, it is essential to challenge this perspective.
While experience in governance is undoubtedly valuable, it is not the only determinant of effective leadership. Betara’s hands-on experience at the grassroots level has equipped him with a unique understanding of his constituents’ challenges and aspirations, an advantage that many seasoned politicians lack. The argument that Betara’s limited governance experience could hinder his effectiveness as a leader overlooks the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature of contemporary governance. Modern challenges such as poverty, healthcare access, and economic instability require leaders who are adaptable, innovative, and attuned to public needs over those who merely possess conventional political experience. Betara’s pragmatic approach and results-oriented mindset align perfectly with the imperatives of today’s governance landscape.

As Betara embarks on the journey to solidify his legacy and possibly elevate his status, it is crucial that he remain grounded in the very principles that have defined his tenure thus far and work to change the pointers to his weaknesses. His supporters call for change, not merely for the sake of elevation but as a testament to his results-driven approach. Adding H.E. to his name especially on Borno soil, which he is an acknowledged son symbolizes an acknowledgment of his efforts and his capacity to effect change at a higher level—a potential benefit for both his constituency and the broader governance structure in Nigeria. In positioning himself as a candidate for greater influence under the APC umbrella in Borno, Betara must embrace the complexities of leadership while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical governance. His supporters envision a future where he not only advocates for better health and economic policies but also plays a pivotal role in shaping the broader narrative of governance in Nigeria.
While many believe in his capacity to transcend the traditional barriers that have historically marginalized minority tribes in Borno, others maintain that an “iron wall” exists between the governorship office and candidates from these minority groups, to which Hon. Muktari Betara Aliyu belongs. However, it is essential to acknowledge the significant attributes that Hon. Betara brings to the table. He possesses not only a solid political background but also a deep understanding of the diverse needs of the people of Borno State. His experience as a legislator has equipped him with the requisite skills to navigate the murky waters of state politics. His political network extends beyond the borders of southern Borno, enhancing his visibility and appeal across various demographic groups. He has forged alliances with influential figures and other stakeholders who can bolster his campaign. His ability to engage with citizens and listen to their concerns positions him as a leader who is genuinely invested in public service. Hence, on the surface, there are substantial reasons to believe that Betara could indeed shatter the metaphorical jinx that has dogged previous minority candidates aspiring for the governorship office.
However, critics argue that despite these qualities, there exists a formidable barrier that Betara must confront: the deeply entrenched political traditions that favor dominant ethnic groups over minorities. The sociopolitical fabric of Borno has been woven together using threads of tribal allegiances, making it difficult for a candidate from a minority group to secure widespread acceptance. Historical precedence reveals a pattern where political power has largely been concentrated among the majority groups, often sidelining those from minority backgrounds. This scenario raises the question of whether Betara can overcome this longstanding bias against minority tribes.
The assertion that the deputy governorship position is the “birthright” of southern Borno’s people stems from a history of political marginalization. In this light, Betara may be perceived as aiming for what is deemed a more attainable role rather than risking an ambitious gubernatorial bid. While some individuals may argue that garnering support for the deputy governorship may be a pragmatic decision, it simultaneously underscores the limitations imposed on minority candidates within the state’s political hierarchy. The prevailing sentiment suggests that the governorship remains out of reach, effectively creating an iron wall that Betara would need to dismantle.

Another crucial aspect of this discourse is the role of public perception and voter sentiment. In contemporary politics, the opinions and beliefs of the electorate can significantly sway electoral outcomes. If Betara fails to galvanize public support due to the stigma associated with his ethnic background, his chances of winning could diminish markedly. However, if he successfully articulates a vision for inclusive governance, prioritizing unity and collaboration among all ethnic groups, there lies the potential to reshape perceptions within the electorate. Communication strategies targeting the disillusioned and marginalized sectors of society could potentially break down preconceived notions, bridging gaps between various communities.
Yet, it is vital to consider the influence of external factors, such as the national political climate and party dynamics. Political affiliations play a crucial role in shaping electoral strategies and determining candidates’ viability. If leaders from dominant ethnic groups decide to support Betara’s candidacy, it could lend him much-needed credibility and legitimacy—a move that may help dismantle the iron wall. Conversely, if the local and national political environments remain resistant to change, Betara might find himself fighting an uphill battle, as entrenched interests may prefer to maintain the status quo.
Despite the challenges outlined, it is essential to embrace optimism regarding the potential for change. In politics, faith can indeed move mountains. There are numerous examples worldwide of leaders who have risen to prominence against all odds, fueled by determination and an unwavering belief in their capacity to enact change. Thus, if Betara chooses to harness this spirit, there certainly exists hope for a transformative journey towards the governorship of Borno State. Until then, I will be looking into the standing position of our Distinguished Senator, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, in the lineup of four distinguished personalities the Borno social media platform names as the frontrunners for Governor Zulum’s seat in Maiduguri Government House come 2027.

2027: “VP Shettima is the soul of the Tinubu ticket.”
2027: “VP Shettima is the soul of the Tinubu ticket.”
By: Dr. James Bwala
In the complex and often unpredictable landscape of Nigerian politics, few figures command the nuanced respect and unyielding support that Vice President Kashim Shettima does within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and beyond. As Nigeria approaches the pivotal 2027 elections, political discourse has increasingly focused on the symbiotic relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his vice president, Shettima—an alliance many analysts and insiders argue forms an inseparable whole. Among those who have championed this narrative for over a decade, I have steadfastly promoted and defended Shettima’s candidacy and political persona in the media, convinced that he is not only indispensable to Tinubu’s ticket but indeed its very soul.
Shettima’s political journey is marked by resilience, versatility, and a deep commitment to Nigeria’s democratic evolution. From his early days as governor of Borno State—where he confronted extremist insurgencies with a combination of diplomacy and firmness—to his current role as vice president, Shettima has consistently demonstrated qualities essential to governance: courage, strategic thinking, and an unshakeable connection to the grassroots. These attributes have earned him a rare kind of political capital, transcending regional and ethnic divides that often constrain Nigerian politicians.

The past few years have seen me articulate these points repeatedly, emphasizing Shettima’s unique ability to balance the interests of northern Nigeria while aligning with Tinubu’s southwestern base. This duality is critical in a country where political equations are fundamentally intertwined with geography and identity. Shettima’s presence on the ticket effectively broadens the coalition, ensuring that the APC maintains electoral competitiveness across key demographics. His role is not merely symbolic or ceremonial; it is a strategic masterstroke aimed at reflecting the diversity and unity Nigeria aspires to embody.
Yet, despite these clear advantages, skepticism about Shettima’s political heft persists among certain commentators and factions. Some critics assert that he lacks the “political weight” to govern effectively at the national level or that his influence is confined to limited spheres. These critiques often hinge on isolated events or a narrow interpretation of political dynamics. However, such views overlook the broader, more intricate realities of Nigerian politics, where soft power, coalition-building, and consensus-making are just as vital as raw electoral numbers or populist appeal.

A compelling rejoinder to these doubts was recently offered by my respected colleague, Mr. Abdul Rafiu Lawal, former correspondent for TELL Magazine, whose insights carry considerable weight owing to his extensive experience and analytical rigor. Lawal described Vice President Shettima as the “soul of the Tinubu ticket,” a phrase that encapsulates the essence of Shettima’s indispensability to the ruling coalition. He went further to caution that if President Tinubu were to disregard or sever this alliance, he would be committing a grave political error—a move that would jeopardize the ticket’s viability and electoral success.
Lawal’s commentary crystallizes the argument that Shettima is far more than a mere running mate; he is the linchpin of their collective political destiny. His presence on the ticket provides coherence to the APC’s narrative of inclusiveness and stability amid an often fragmented political landscape. Indeed, Shettima’s extensive networks, especially in the crucial Northern geopolitical region, afford the administration a strategic edge in mobilizing voters and consolidating support in areas that might otherwise remain skeptical of the Tinubu-led platform.

Beyond electoral calculations, Shettima’s role as the vice president projects a message of reconciliation and forward-looking governance. Nigeria’s history is punctuated by periods of sectional tension and mistrust among its diverse ethnic groups. Having a northeasterner of Shettima’s stature occupying this high office signals a commitment to embracing all corners of the nation, fostering unity and shared purpose. This symbolism resonates with millions who seek assurance that their voices and concerns matter in the corridors of power.
VP Shettima embodies a blend of youthful dynamism and seasoned political acumen that complements Tinubu’s leadership style. Together, they project an image of a government both rooted in experience and responsive to contemporary challenges. This synergy is critical as Nigeria confronts pressing issues—from economic diversification and security threats to social cohesion and infrastructural development.

Detractors might argue that political alliances in Nigeria are ephemeral, driven by expediency rather than enduring conviction. While this skepticism is not unfounded historically, the Tinubu-Shettima partnership demonstrates notable durability and shared vision. It is a relationship forged not solely on political convenience but also on mutual respect and a convergent understanding of Nigeria’s needs at this juncture. The consistency of Shettima’s public service record, alongside Tinubu’s leadership trajectory, attests to a partnership built on genuine collaboration.
In light of these considerations, the discourse surrounding the “Shettima issue” must be reframed. Rather than questioning his legitimacy or capacity, stakeholders ought to recognize that the vice president’s role transcends individual ambition. He is a critical agent for national consolidation, whose contributions underpin the larger framework of political stability and growth.

As the nation moves closer to the 2027 elections, the importance of coherent, inclusive leadership cannot be overstated. The stakes are high, and the electorate is discerning. Political actors who understand and embrace the composite nature of Nigeria’s polity will be better positioned to deliver lasting progress. Herein lies the significance of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s place on the Tinubu ticket—it is the embodiment of unity in diversity, a strategic nod to Nigeria’s pluralistic fabric, and a testament to the power of principled partnership.
The vice president is undeniably the soul of the Tinubu ticket. His political gravitas, regional representation, and commitment to national development enrich the ticket’s appeal and functionality. To undermine or dismiss his role is to risk destabilizing an alliance that offers Nigeria a credible path towards cohesion and prosperity. As articulated by Abdul Rafiu Lawal and evidenced by decades of Shettima’s public engagement, the vice presidency is not a peripheral appointment but a central pillar in the architecture of Nigeria’s evolving democracy. For those invested in the country’s future, embracing Shettima’s indispensability is not just a political calculation—it is a patriotic imperative.
