Zulum Rolls Out N1bn Transport Support, Distributes 500 Electric Tricycles to Borno Riders

By: Michael Mike

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has unveiled a sweeping transport intervention package valued at ₦1 billion, alongside the distribution of 500 electric tricycles to operators across Maiduguri metropolis and Jere Local Government Area.

The initiative, which targets 1,000 Keke NAPEP riders, is part of the state government’s broader strategy to modernize urban mobility, reduce operating costs, and cushion the economic strain on transporting workers and residents.

The eco-friendly tricycles were originally inaugurated on December 20, 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a significant collaboration between federal and state authorities to promote sustainable transport solutions.

Speaking at the launchiNg held at the Government House in Maiduguri, Zulum described the programme as a deliberate effort to empower vulnerable operators while advancing environmental sustainability.

“This initiative is not just about distributing tricycles; it is about restoring dignity, improving livelihoods, and creating a more efficient and affordable transportation system for our people,” the governor said.

He emphasized that the electric tricycles, procured months earlier, are designed to lower operational costs and reduce dependence on fuel, while contributing to a cleaner urban environment.

To ensure accessibility, the state government has committed to subsidizing 30 percent of the cost of each tricycle, with a structured repayment plan to be managed by a designated committee.

“The subsidy is intended to ease the financial burden on beneficiaries and guarantee that the programme remains inclusive and impactful,” Zulum added, stressing the need for strict adherence to operational guidelines to sustain the initiative.

Beyond the tricycle distribution, the governor announced a direct financial intervention targeting 16,783 registered riders drawn from 25 transport associations. Each beneficiary is to receive ₦50,000, as part of measures to mitigate the impact of prevailing economic challenges.

According to Zulum, the ₦1 billion support package underscores his administration’s commitment to strengthening the informal transport sector, which remains a critical component of urban mobility and job creation in the state.

Chairman of the Borno State Empowerment Committee, Hon. Saina Buba, disclosed that each electric tricycle has a range of up to 65 kilometers per charge, making them both efficient and cost-effective for daily operations.

He noted that beneficiaries were transparently selected through their respective associations, without political interference, to ensure fairness and credibility in the process.

The event drew top government functionaries and political leaders, including members of the National Assembly and the Borno State House of Assembly, underscoring the significance of the intervention in the state’s economic recovery and development agenda.

Observers say the programme could serve as a model for other states seeking to integrate clean energy solutions into public transportation while addressing unemployment and rising living costs.

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have repelled suspected Fulani Bandits during a rapid response operation following reports of sporadic gunfire around Banasu High Ground in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 1:52 p.m. on July 2, when troops of Sector 8, Sub-Sector 81, deployed at Gyambwas, received reports of intermittent shootings around the Banasu High Ground.

Security sources said that the planned attack was in response to previous attack on hardees and rustling of their livestock by Militia men in Mangu.

Acting swiftly on the distress report, the troops moved to the area and engaged the armed criminals in a firefight.

According to the sources, the superior firepower of the troops forced the assailants to abandon their mission and retreat towards the surrounding high ground.

No casualties were reported among the troops during the encounter.

Security sources said the troops have sustained surveillance and monitoring of the area, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent any further attacks.

The operation forms part of ongoing security efforts by Operation Enduring Peace to prevent any armed militia activities and enhance security across Plateau State.

Troops Clear Zamfara Highway of Explosive Threats, Recover Police Vehicle Damaged by IED

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of the 1 Brigade have successfully cleared the Bagega–Anka major supply route in Zamfara State of explosive threats, restoring safe movement along the road after a comprehensive route scanning operation.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation was carried out at about 9:30 a.m. on July 2 by troops of the brigade in conjunction with a Quick Response Force (QRF) and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

According to the sources, the troops conducted a thorough route scanning exercise along the Bagega–Anka Main Supply Route (MSR) in Anka Local Government Area to detect and neutralise any improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or other explosive hazards.

At the conclusion of the operation, the route was confirmed free of explosive threats and was subsequently reopened to vehicular traffic.

During the exercise, the troops also recovered a Nigeria Police Counter-Terrorism/Counter-Strike (NP CSK) vehicle that had recently struck an improvised explosive device along the same route.

The operation was completed without incident, and no casualties were recorded among the troops.

Security sources said the route clearance forms part of sustained counter-insurgency and counter-banditry efforts aimed at ensuring the safety of motorists, security personnel and residents travelling along strategic roads in Zamfara State.

They added that troops will continue aggressive route clearance patrols and surveillance operations to deny criminal elements the opportunity to emplace explosive devices on major highways within the theatre of operations.

Troops Intercept Armoured Vehicle in Niger, Arrest Driver Over Suspected Irregular Documentation

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD have intercepted an armoured vehicle in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State and arrested its driver for further investigation over documents presented during the movement of the vehicle.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the interception occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on July 2, when troops of the 221 Battalion conducting security operations stopped the armoured vehicle at Wawa town.

According to the sources, the driver was unable to satisfactorily account for the movement of the vehicle and presented what he claimed was an End User Certificate purportedly issued by a top security agency.

The suspect reportedly told the troops that he was conveying the armoured vehicle to its owner in Abuja.

The authenticity of the document and the legality of the vehicle’s movement are, however, being subjected to further verification by the relevant authorities.

Military sources said the driver and the armoured vehicle have been taken into custody pending the outcome of investigations.

The interception forms part of ongoing efforts by Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD to monitor the movement of sensitive security assets, curb illegal arms-related activities, and strengthen security across the North Central region.

The sources added that investigations are ongoing to determine the ownership of the vehicle, verify the End User Certificate, and establish whether all regulatory and security requirements were complied with before the vehicle’s movement.
