Sports critical to physical, mental alertness of officers – COAS
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Farouk Yahaya, has described sports as very critical to the physical and mental alertness of military officers.
Yahaya made the remark during the ceremonial tee-off of a golf tournament at the Arsenal Golf Course on Saturday in Owerri.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament was part of activities marking the year 2022 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
Yahaya, who was represented by Maj.-Gen. Victor Ezeugwu, the Corps Commander, Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, also launched hole 4 at the Golf Course.
He said that the game would go a long way in helping the physical training of officers as well keep them mentally alert to the happenings in their environment.
“The physical and mental alertness of a military officer form part of his welfare, which is key to success in the discharge of his constitutional duties.
“We will continue to support the game and to promote national unity as part of our core mandate through sports,” he said.
Speaking, Captain of the Arsenal Golf and Country Club, Commodore Ogechi Osuagwu (rtd), of the Nigerian Navy, thanked the COAS for identifying with the club during the auspicious occasion of the commemoration of the Nigerian Army Day.
Osuagwu described the club as the best of its kind in the South-East geo-political zone.
According to him, the hole 4, launched by the COAS, would, among other things, add feathers to golf in Imo, thus providing a platform for the improvement of civil-military relations in the state.
He appealed to the COAS to support the club with a 300KVA Transformer for generation of electric power and an annual subvention to keep the club going.
The golf captain requested that the hole 4 be annually maintained with a subscription of N200,000.
He further thanked Gov. Hope Uzodimma for his efforts at ensuring the security of Imo residents and providing the enabling environment for social activities to thrive in the state.
He also advised youths to eschew criminality, and work towards ensuring lasting peace and security in their various communities.
“The Arsenal Golf Course has played an enormous role in strengthening civil-military relations in the state and we thank the COAS for accepting the hole 4 which we offered to him, and for launching it,” he said.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the COAS in appreciation of his support for the club as well as awards, cash and gift prizes such as flat screen televisions and refrigerators to winners of different categories.
NAN also reports that the event was attended by serving and former military officers, prominent among whom was the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

Although the Nigeria women’s basketball team exited the Olympics after losing to the US, they left earning a new position in the rankings and with new records to keep their heads high in the world of basketball. The US defeated the Nigerian women’s basketball team 88-74 in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympic Games on Wednesday. But more accolades follow the Nigerian team as they vacate the Olympics, with D’Tigress coach Rena Wakama named the best basketball coach, and remarkably, Nigeria’s Ezinne Kalu was named to the All-Second Team of Paris 2024 Women’s Basketball.
Nigeria became the first African team, men or women, to reach the knockout stage of an Olympic basketball tournament. The plucky Nigerian underdogs have been one of the feel-good stories of the Paris Games for their spirited, joyful play and boundless self-belief that have embodied the Olympic spirit.
But an Olympic first is one thing; bringing an end to the US 58-match winning streak and run of seven consecutive gold medals would have been a contender for the biggest upset in sporting history. The Nigerians also would not be intimidated by the US and stood their ground at the finish when the Americans vented some frustrations with Kahleah Copper of the US swatting the ball at Ezinne Kalu after she drove in for a layup as the final second ticked off the clock.
The Nigeria women’s basketball team coach, D’Tigress, Rena Wakama, was announced the best basketball coach by
the International Basketball Federation (FFIBA) on Sunday as the Paris Olympic Games came to an end. The recognition by FIBA is a testament to Wakama’s exceptional leadership and tactical prowess, which propelled Nigeria to unprecedented heights at the Olympic Games.
At 32, Wakama masterminded an incredible Nigerian run, leading D’Tigress to become the first African country to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Her team’s remarkable journey was marked by unforgettable victories over world number 3 Australia and world number 5 Canada. Wakama’s coaching expertise and strategic brilliance were on full display as D’Tigress pushed the USA to the limit in the quarterfinals, ultimately bowing out after a gallant display.
The Nigerian female basketball team, D’Tigress, has become the first African team to ever qualify for the quarterfinals of the Olympic women’s basketball tournament. They achieved this feat in Paris, France, after defeating the #5-ranked Canada by a score of 79-70 in their last group game of the tournament. En route to the quarterfinals, they also pulled a major upset by defeating #3-ranked Australia.

While the world and indeed Nigeria continue to celebrate coach Rena Wakama and her team for this achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian basketball and a proud milestone for African sports, we are equally celebrating Engr. Musa Kida (Oshun, 78-Set) for his foresight in unveiling the new face of administration for Nigeria’s basketball. These feats have been made possible by the stellar leadership of the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Engr. Musa Kida.
Musa Kida, who remains the pride of his alma mater as captain of the school team, keeps the line of the donging game and takes position on the professional pitch, as well as pursuing his engineering calling to become an accomplished oil and gas professional. He rose to the exiled position of Deputy Managing Director of Total E & P, and since retiring from Total, he has been at the forefront of repositioning Nigerian basketball.
His achievements and records in the NBA keep speaking for themselves. Today, Rena Wakama is one of the products of his strategic administration.

Rena Wakama Crowned Top Coach At Paris 2024 Olympics
Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been honored as the best female basketball coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced her recognition through their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.
Wakama, who made history as the first Nigerian woman to coach a national basketball team, led D’Tigress to an impressive quarter-final berth at the Olympics. This milestone marks the first time any African team, male or female, has reached this stage of the competition. Despite a challenging 74-88 defeat to Team USA in the quarter-finals, Wakama’s tactical acumen and leadership earned widespread praise from FIBA officials.
Initially, her appointment in June 2023 was met with skepticism due to her limited international coaching experience. However, at just 32 years old, Wakama exceeded all expectations, breaking new ground for Nigerian and African basketball. The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) supported her appointment, emphasizing her experience as a former D’Tigress player as a vital asset.
Wakama’s journey, which began amid doubts, has now culminated in this prestigious award. Her leadership during the Olympics has not only highlighted her coaching talents but also placed Nigerian basketball firmly in the global spotlight.
This accolade comes after a series of challenges and successes for Wakama, solidifying her as a key figure in the sport. Her achievements have been celebrated by fans and officials alike, reinforcing her role in advancing Nigerian basketball and inspiring future generations.
